My kid and his buddies reported back to me on a larger public lake , they found 6 inches of ice top 2 inches was the white ice and bottom 4 was clear they fished it and caught some nice specks and some decent gills . Of course they used a spud with caution and then a few guys decided to follow them with no spud and no ideal .

I was out in the Jackson area yesterday, tested the ice on a couple of public lakes. I found 4-5" of what I would call mediocre ice with ~3" of good clear ice and ~2" of snow packed white capped ice. Not Ideal, and maybe this melt coming in the next couple of days might help the ice quality for January.

Tough today fished 8am to noon, nice cloud cover thought crappie might be on...nada. got 4 dink gills and a yellow perch. Tried for pike with livebait but no takes. Few other guys out, only talked to one of em and similar story.

Will be out again tomorrow. Same little lake with 5 inches solid ice... lake i prefer was sketchy still. But gotta get out because all will be unsafe after the upcoming weather.

I too took advantage of the favorable conditions but I couldn't get out until 3;30, fished till 5 and took home 10 , 28 fow 50 ft from the weed line , 5" of ice, fish anywhere from 10 ft to the bottom, hesitant biters on a pearl and red tungsten with a few maggots

Be safe out there , some lakes have open water and our luck will run out in a couple days

Went out 1-6pm. Lake Somerset. Ice 5-7”. Fished 10-24 fow. Marked a ton, finicky bite for me. Tried everything from tungsten with plastics, spikes, Swedish nipples, jigging raps and bead spoons. Did best on bead spoons. Bunch of gills 5-9”, bunch of smerch. Lost a pretty decent pike at the hole, broke me off and took my lucky bead spoon. If anyone fishes there and catches a pike with a silver bead spoon with red/chartreuse bead let me know. Surprised I didn’t get anny craps, first time in 4 years I haven’t gotten one on the hard water. Are there any decent perch lakes around here? Will be out early again in the am.

Fished a little pond by my house I dont know the name of it. Mosttly never see anyone there but I know guys do fish it cause I see their garbage. They must have had a party the night before cause there was beer cans and cig butts all over the ice. I think someone even pooped out there :(
I catch perch and gills there. Nothing huge but nice to have a spot close to home where I can get some fish.
Fished noon til dark. Ice was pretty good 4 maybe 5 inches everywhere I fished. Caught lots of small ones. No perch. Just bass and gills. Got one nice keepr size 9 incher red ear. I put it in my bucket hoping to catch some more but only got small ones so let him go at the end of the day.
Saw some nice pike and large mouths swim under me. Had a big bass swim in and slurp one of my minnows. I could see the tear drop right on the edge of his lip. Pulled up and it popped out. Would have been fun catch, he was pretty big.

I used minnows and wax worms with tear drops and flicker spoons.

Was nice to get out for a bit. All my stuff is now packed in my truck waiting for the next freeze up. I'm ready!!!!

6 perch for me today 9 to noon, didnt have a bite until 11 and then i found the yellows..3 were dinks but other 3 nice 8-9" keeper size...had to cut it early though so tossed em back...no love from the pike on live minnows...
Getting a sonar shipped to me soon from my brother...hope i get it when the ice is safe again after this rain and warmup. Should help with the crappie since they like to suspend..
