I'm a 1911 guy. Always have been. Then a friend needed to unload his Glock19 for money. Couldn't pass up the deal. Have to say, it's a tack driver. Has become my main carry gun, because I can abuse it, and not care. LOL!
Love my 1911s and love this story.

I took MDFIs Handgun cover and movement in the sand bowl at Caledonia Sportsmans club some years ago. This class involves getting a lot of sand in your gun and mags. My Wilson 5" CQB 9mm was one a few guns that had zero malfunctions that day. There was an officer in class with his duty Glock 22 that had nothing but issues all day long.

Maybe you're not paying attention then. Stock Glocks are everywhere, including on the competition podium. The aftermarket is so big because it's a fun tinkering platform, like the AR-15 and the Ford Mustang.
Maybe but out of 10 guys I know and shoot competition with only one has a stock trigger and he still had under the trigger filed for a better grip angle.

From Tom Clancy's * latest novel - Red Winter .

The setting -
East Germany circa. 1985, "Cobb" is a virulently anti-communist German citizen assisting the C.I.A. . He's here providing a pistol for "Clark" , a C.I.A. agent just secreted into east Berlin:

Clark prided himself on keeping up with the firearms of the world. He'd yet to shoot one , but recognized this one as a Glock Model 17.
Clark, "Does it have a mag disconnect?"
Cobb, "Nope I hear you though. My only quibble about the Browning Hi-Power is that damned magazine disconnect. No, the Glock might be ugly as hell, but it's a fighting gun, pure and simple. If there's a round in the chamber, she'll go bang whether you have a magazine in or not."

Hmmm...I'm not sure the right choice was made. You guys know more about these things than I do so...What say you ?

9mm Hi-Power

* Amazing how Clancy's been dead for nearly 10 years but he still manages to crank out a new novel just about every year . This one is actually pretty good so far.
I own both, the Hi Power since 1974. All I have to say is “if it wasn’t for John Browning we would still be throwing rocks at each other”

If true, why do I never see a stock Glock and why does it have more aftermarket parts made for it then other gun?
Same reason they make more aftermarket parts for Chevy motors than any other. They make up the most engines used today. More options and upgrades for them. Tell me which other pistol company is used by law enforcement more than Glock.

Glocks are ugly but very dependable, just like a hammer. They don’t need to look good they just need to work. The Hi Power is a classic piece of art that is very nice to shoot.

Well put. I love my Colt Gold Cup and Kimber 1911 pistols but for dependability, my Glocks are first. Ugly and not the same feel in hand I'll agree. They don't fail and run unconditionally for me when it counts. Again I'll say my 43X is my favorite carry pistol for personally defense daily.

I might buy the law enforcement argument if they only purchased based on performance but like any other government programs price is the most important. Same reason they mostly use Streamlight it's cheaper than Surefire.

I am not bashing Glock they make a good solid gun, but they are not perfect. I see them fail all the time while their fans claim things like perfection, and they never fail. My friend who was a gunsmith also disagrees and had them in the shop all the time.
I have shot Glocks that fail and I can’t stand the 2x4 grip and grip angle. I don’t like polymer pistols in general either but if I was forced to pick one, I would pick the Smith and Wesson M&P 2.0 5” barrel with a thumb safety. Better grip and I feel better with a manual safety on a striker fired gun.

First in spending isn't how they decide. It's usually second. Then they always get a LE discount on any department mass purchase as does any LE agency. Glocks are less expensive no doubt but that comes from a polymer platform. Other companies are using that same(polymer) platform in their pistols today yet Glock is what's been chosen for defense/duty pistols.

Glock was the first commercially available and affordable polymer pistol. Then it was deemed double action so police departments in the 80s started using it over revolvers. That is how Glock got into law enforcement hands. With newer models coming out departments can 1) get the LE bulk discount 2) trade in older Glock models for an additional discount 3) not have to retrain and recertifiy every officer 4) not buy new holsters 5) not buy new magazines.

I have personal reasons to not buy one but by no means am I saying Glock is bad but Glock is not perfect or the best pistol out there either. In my experience, those that think Glock Perfection is true or any pistol not Glock is no good have only shot Glock or maybe put one magazine through any other pistol.

Ya I get it. Not everyone likes a Glock. I also will say NO pistol or rifle hasn't or will not fail. I like to use the law of averages. Given Glocks are probably used more than any other pistol for defense, law enforcement and real good numbers in competition. Meaning the more out there being used, the more failures you'll see. It's a common sense point. I said it thousands of times and will always say, I prefer my 1911 pistols for comfort and even target shooting and some hunting. The "2x4" grip comment isn't far off from most Glock grips, especially the biggest frame models. My G43X is the exception. I do not carry any of my 1911 pistols for defense or a ccw. They all have a place in my life. I just prioritize them how I see fit

Either you've been reading on how the LE agencies purchase firearms or your current or retired LE. Correct on these statements BUT dependability and reliability are still first and foremost. Best out there is an opinion statement regarding Glock vs other pistols.

I armored our SIG Sauer pistols before Glock replaced them in 2015-2016 sometime. SIG guns were over double the price of Glocks and had way more failures over all. I've armored several make semi autos in my career years and Glocks had least failures or issues even shooter related. Everyone has their personal favorite pistol but it doesn't hurt to have experience with many makes and the personal history and repair record of several models. It's how I chose which I prefer to be my personal choice. Browning's Hi Power isn't a poor choice by no means. I'd take it over a Sig based on what I've seen.

Know and talk to many police armorers and chiefs at local, state, and federal levels. A few have stated that they wish they could get rid of Glock due to officer complaints (mostly about the grip and size) but it is too expensive. Dependability and reliability should be number 1 for anyone and luckily there are a lot of choices out there. I have shot Glock models 17, 19, 42, 43X, and 40 extensively and the big Glocks are blocks and every model had FTF and FTEs with different ammo styles, brands, and weights.

Thanks pisteleros ...

This thread seems to have petered out...as all threads do so it's time, after three pages of 57 replies, to say thanks to all of you . I started the thread in a somewhat jocular way and without any expectation that it would go on as it did with a ton of both kidding and informative replies. Thanks again.

I wouldn't stick a fork in it yet. We haven't even touched upon how much better the 40 S&W is compared to the 9mm Parabellum [emoji12]
