After going thru all that I'd replace both wheel/tires, keep the good one for a spare.... While your at it, I'd suggest cleaning, inspecting and repacking the wheel bearing. Make sure and use the green/blue "High Temp Wheel Bearing Grease"! ;) Then invest in a set of bearing buddy's, a grease gun along with a tube or two of the "HTWBG". ;)

BTW - Although there are some that dont care for Walmarts they have some of the best prices on ATV, Garden Tractor and Trailer tires...
Took the wheel to a local tire store that's never done me wrong. $30 tire out the door, and they cleaned up the wheel before they put the new tire on. The other wheel has a much newer tire on it... friend who gave me the trailer said they replaced that one a year or two ago.

I repacked the bearings last night. I own 3 trailers at the moment for a total of 6 wheels/bearing sets. I'm all over the re-packing thing! Do it all the time. Have all the tools. Even have a set of bearing buddies laying around... just have to find them!

Thanks for the advise though.:D

Cool! Just hate to see people broke down on the side of the road with tire/bearing problems that could have been avoided with a little bit of maintance.... Happy Trails! (and trailering!) ;)

As far as my sleds go I cut my teeth on a '70 Rupp Sno-Sport. Big 'ol one lunger Sachs that could pull your shoulder out and your fingers off if you werent careful when you were starting it! 55 mph all day long! Have had more than a few others along the way. Wish I still had that ol' Rupp.....

We're (wife and I) currently riding on two 2001 Phazers. I've wrenched on more than few sleds in my day and I'll tell yah, there aint nothing more dependable than the Yamaha fan cooled Phazer engine! Everyone I knew that owned one never had to do much besides the basic maintance, maybe foul a plug now and again. If they did have a problem it usually wasnt the sleds fault! :yikes:

They aint the fastest but it gets me from one place to the next and back again and verey easy on gas!

Best thing Yamaha ever did was put that power plant in the SX style chassis, worst thing they ever did was quit building it!

I believe Polaris has that honor since the name stands for, "Park on lake and retrieve in spring." :fish:

just finishing up rebuilding the top end of my '79 Exciter tonite. First time doing this type of mechanicin. ready to rip around on some fresh snow (hopefully) If not the '91 Lynx will start for sure.

What was the reason for the upper end OH? If you've melted down a piston, especially the PTO/Clutch side you might have a bad/leaking crank seal. If so this failure might repeat itself.......

I rebuilt the top end because compression was down to 60lbs on the pto side. the other side had been redone a couple years ago and bored out .020 over but that was the only side he did. so I had both bored out at .040 and redid pistons/rings. took me about 50 pulls to get the fuel to fill the bowl on the carb and it fired right up. now I just have to stud the track for better ice fishing traction and I can take it out the door.
I'm usually an arctic cat fan but I like the look of the old yamaha too. I'd like to find another 73-74 eltigre to play with. had a quad plug about 10 years ago but sold it and lost track of where it is now, wish I'd hung on to it. :eek:ne_eye:

That donÂ’t sound right... You'd better check the fuel filter, fuel lines for cracks, leaks around the fittings and the fuel pump. As well that crank (PTO) seal I mentioned earlier could be leaking. The fuel pump runs/operates offa vacuum........

BTW - What kinda carb(s) are you running? The Exciters originally had a single butterfly/diaphram type carb, no "fuel bowl"....

I may have been exaggerating, the sled is running great, I did replace all the fuel lines and removed the oil injection from the sled too. thanks for the advice on the pto seal, it doesn't seem to be leaking.
