Holy cow!

Thanks to a unique cartridge case made of a new steel alloy, the Backcountry is not just a better long-range 7mm. It may be the greatest ammo-making innovation of our lifetimes…

I imagine if it cost the same it could be why not? If something instills confidence that in itself can be beneficial. Or perhaps softer brass still offers some advantages? Options are usually a good thing.

Someone didn't read the article. This isn't like the cheap Russian steel case stuff. This is a special steel alloy with higher lubricity to ease extraction, and is apparently reloadable (therefore probably boxer primed, but probably also requiring special sizing dies). It has to be steel to contain the higher 80k PSI pressure. Basically, it's an all-steel take on the concept behind the 80k PSI 6.8x51 cartridge SIG designed for the Army.

The potential is compelling.

Rounds like the 300WM, other 7mm mags PRC’s, could be flat shooting from 0-300 yards with maybe 3” high and 3” low on the front and back ends with proper zero…out of a 24” barrel.

This round can do the same out of a 16” barrel. Thats the intrigue.

Some people don’t like change.

This is the first full steel alloy cartridge out, but it will not be the last.

Imagine pushing a 308 at 300WM speeds out of a short action 16” barrel rifle…

And I agree with the above statement about straight walled cartridges. Can we push a 450 or 350 a bit faster? Wouldn’t we want that? A 45 caliber 250gr bullet going 2,500 fps?

Evolution of firearm tech is inevitable. As one talking head on YT stated, the technology we’re using today for ammo is 150 years old. We’ve changed case sizes, powders, shoulder angles, etc, but we’ve been pushing bullets at 65k psi for a hundred years.

Who knows where this will lead us?

I love innovation and I have proof that I chased the "latest craze" in my safes. But I'll keep my 7mm PRC with a carbon fiber barrel until I get to shoot something that makes it seem obsolete.

I am just talking about this caliber.

Federal just copied Weatherby's homework...and Remington 7mm, 300 RUM, 338 win mag, ect. I'm not that old and already tired of the boutique cartridges that don't offer anything over what has been available since the 1970snand earlier. Expensive ammo is the reason the 300 rum & 375 H&H sit in the safe, if their ammo was around $30 a box, they might have my interest.

Another marketing brainchild. Federal hasn't done much and primers seem to be their only market lately. Not even sure if the cases are reloadable. For the non- reloader only more than likely. 28 Nosler if you want top 7mm performance. 3200 with 195s from a 28" barrel. Now Hornady will have to answer the Back County ammo introduction. Looks good on paper but let's wait and see what the real results are from users. The 6.8 Western sounded good too. I sure see a lot for sale in classifieds on shooting and LR hunting forums

There are companies working on plastic cases where the primer is molded in and are a one-time use for the military. The thought process is the weight reduction from brass/steel cases to plastic allows each soldier to carry more rounds in the field. I’m sure the environmentalist will love that plan!!

I think the idea of that Backcountry hunting ammo with the higher pressures is simply to get higher velocities from shorter lighter barrels. Not sure if it's gimmicky or an actual thing. Alloy cases taking higher pressures i get but even using brass cases, they can only fill to bullet base and all bolt guns today are designed for some pretty high pressures.

For hunting? Because people need to take even longer shots?

Didn’t realize current ammo was so ineffective.
WOW.....just what we needed.........pass
It's an amazing genetic conundrum that every year or two and seemingly parallel with "new technology marketing cycles" elk are evolving as to getting stronger , warier and becoming more difficult to kill while hunters in the same genetic timeframe are devolving rather than evolving and becoming more suited to shooting from a static platform as opposed to mobile hunting.

Ain't evolution grand .
