Nugent should never have been allowed to slander and defame the DNR department as he so publicly did, calling all CO's 'jack-booted thugs'! All personnel 'immoral' and 'stupid'.

That was a meeting of combined committees..3 of them....and all 3 Chairmen failed in their responsibilities to require probative credible t.estimony from a witness. They lost control of the meeting toa man convicted of multiple game law violations across multiple states.

Paint me disappointed in those chairmen and committee members.

Wisconsin bans baiting in about 61 of it's 72 counties. They go by positive CWD findings, and adjust accordingly.
Looks like baiting has been WI #1 hunting violation for several yrs.
Nugent is off-putting. Over the top drama, the self-rightousness. Carrying when he was at the meeting. Inaccurate with some facts. He's an embarrassment to the hunting cause and himself... my .02

“Walters on Thursday addressed each of those issues.

Deer baiting spreads diseases such as chronic wasting disease and tuberculosis, he said. Wild hogs should continue to be banned because "they are incredibly destructive" and impossible to remove from an area once they enter, he said.”

Lest I remind you all that this same commissioner voted in favor of the APR Regulation in a CWD area with the best available science at the time (as well as to this day) saying that it was a negative for control of disease transmission.

Talk about grandstanding…..

Most COs are good. Some are bad. Half of the DNR graduated in the bottom of their class. The problem is, that often the bad one are not weeded out. I've even seen bad ones get promoted to leadship roles. The Widlife Division has hit a new low in recent years. The only way to enact change is likely through their pocketbook. That's what is happening now.

"What if you just demanded competent commissioners? You mean to tell me in a state with 10 million, we can't find a straight table's worth of people with dark hair and enough wisdom to be relevant?"

Not anymore LL since it has become all political and the check and balance is not being done by the other side.

I dunno, there's still a lot of hunting desire after killing a buck for many. Plus there's 30K+ 2nd bucks that a few would turn into does I would think. In any event, there can only be more does taken, not less or even stay the same, imo.
IN must not have had the doe situation we have here now. And/or was placating hunters not keen on the 5 yr experiment OBR started out as there.
Does any OBR state have as bad a doe problem as us nowadays? (or as we're told anyway)
I was trying to make the case that OBR ought to be considered instead of APR's when they were discussing them in a disease zone because of the increase in antlerless harvest in Indiana. (I can't remember at this point, whether it was during the APR attempt in the TB zone or the CWD zone.

While I am not sure if the number of antlerless would go up or down in an OBR situation, I would tend to think that the number would fluctuate all that much from where we are now. The only potential drop in the numbers that I could foresee, would be the loss of someone harvesting an antlerless deer while waiting for the second buck.
Again, I don't know what percent of the harvest that would even be.

What's your opinion on whether OBR is a science decision or social? (or somewhere in between?)
Boy, you are making a guy think early on a Monday. :ROFLMAO: I would have to say that it is probably both. While it may be a social decision, there are biologically scientific ramifications of the social decision, such as perhaps, the impact on antlerless harvest, as well as others.

EDIT: If you are asking me if I would be open to OBR, I think I would be.

Must be people HAVEN'T been listening to the DNR for the last what 4-5 years ! Going to be lots of pissed off people in next couple years ! Kill more deer has been said multiple times by DNR until hunters start doing that they will keep putting in more seasons and letting more types of weapons during those seasons til people start doing what has been asked!

Yep, i would not be surprised if the additional 30 day Deer season of January does not get included in all of lower Michigan before the end of the year.

"I could also see them opening up gun season earlier, at least in Zone 3, maybe even to the point where they are doing it while they are still in their summer patterns…just to shoot more deer."

Yea, I can see it in the future were the Horns will no longer matter to the DNR, just shoot them all.
Compound it with CWD were shooters may not want to eat the Deer unless it is tested.
Of course they have their precision count to control the Deer kill were the population of Deer is way down. :banghead:
The Urban January is a oxy moron, Huron County is "Urban" ? :p
Of course we will not mention the current ML season.

That guy is off his rocker. They're not going to do away with bow season. He's being more dramatic than a group of teenage girls put together

Illinois has one if not THE shortest gun seasons nationwide. Their proposal would take the gun season to 4 days instead of 3 days lol. OMG THEY'RE GETTING RID OF BOW SEASON.... not

South Carolina has about 35,000 bow hunters. Michigan has nearly TEN TIMES that many.

The midwestern states have an extremely high proportion of bow hunters, the culture is simply not comparable to South Carolina. The agencies are trying to boost participation, and letting gun season encroach or completely overlap bow season would be contrary to those goals. The amount of stink that would be put up would be of epic proportion

Hell even moving firearm opener to a Saturday instead of fixed Nov 15th goes nowhere in Michigan. What do you think would happen if they got rid of bow season entirely? LOL!

Proportion of deer hunters that use archery equipment:

Illinois - 74%
Michigan - 57%
Ohio - 75%
Wisconsin - 50%

South Carolina - 20%
