I just got a bunch of sabiki rigs off ebay and I'm wondering what size would be good for alewife. I have everything from a #6 to #14. What size would be too big? Also, does anyone have better luck with certain colors (glow, red, plain...)? Thanks for the input :)

Be very careful when ordering on-line whether it's from eBay or even Bass Pro Shops. In many cases the hooks are sized via the Japanese system, which is backwards from ours. A Japanese size 4 is a USA size 12 and a Japanese size 6 is USA size 10. My choice is for a USA size 10 or smaller.

what is a sabiki...is that a spoon for getting your minnows?
No its not a spoon. Its a section of line about 3-4 feet long that has a clip for a weight at the bottom, with small hooks spaced about 6 inches apart on a short leader or tied to the main line. Seemed to be the hot ticket for alewife on the pier last year when cast nets weren't producing.

Do you cast them out? Just drop them over the edge? How do you work one:help:
They come with a snap swivel on the bottom of the rig where you snap on a small weight. You can cast them out, and you can just flip them over the side of the pier....both ways work. Just give them a few jigs as you retrieve the rig, and you will get them to hit. The best way to get alewives to hit when the water is clear and the schools of bait are on the move is to cast far beyond them and work the rig through the school. They can be spooked very easily if you cast or drop the rig directly into the school.
