ORV license and/or permit confusion

Went to go buy my annual state orv permits today and the guy told me I needed a "license" as well. Have not bought one in the past, so was wondering what is up with that. Normally just buy the $10 sticker and put it on the back fender. The brochure says I need a license to ride on "non-private" property AND the regular state permit for state trails. The kids have both passed their state orv certifications and already have their licenses so I assume they don't need the new license but I do.

The guy said I needed to stick the license on the quad just like the permit!?!?! I asked him what about if different people ride the same quad at different times, how would you transfer the licenses, etc. Confused. What exactly do I need? The brochure said this is all intended to "simplify" the permit/licensing system! Ha Ha

So, from what I can tell, I now need to spend $36.25 per quad per year to ride the trails instead of the $16.25 I used to pay! Apparently the "license" is for the quad, not the operator. Wasn't spelled out very well in the DNR pamphlet at Meijers. Not only that, but now I have to plaster TWO lime green stickers all over the back of my quads! :mad: Leave it to the gov't. to SIMPLIFY things I guess!:rant: Thanks for the info.

The ORV trail pass is going to pay for trail maintenance, trail grooming, and making new trails, which is similar to the snowmobile trail pass. Except the ORV trail pass is only $10 instead of $45. I think the ORV trail pass is a good thing if they use the money for what it is intended for. I wish they would widen the ORV trails, because my sport quad barely fits through them. I think the ORV trail pass is going to increase in price every few years just like the snowmobile trail pass does.

As a member of one of the clubs that take care of some of our orv trails and routes. I can tell you what we have been told. The new sticker increases are to go to more law enforcement, and more trails. The DNR Parks and Recreation division has taken over the trail system duty's and have slatted 7% trail expansion per year, most of these will be connector routes into towns and trail to trail connector's. Will see, as stated in earlier post it will take 2-3 years for us to see a big difference.

For mossyhorns the trails will not be made wider as per the DNR, the big issue is there are several clubs taking grant dollars to do a job and they have no accountability the trails are to be maintained at 50" some are not being kept at that spec. this is a problem. My suggestion is that if you find a spot that is narrower than 50" call Paige Perry or Amy Swainston they are the trail techs. for the dnr you will need a approximate location of the problem area and they will check it out and get with the grant holder to fix the issue. Sometimes you can find contact info for the trails at the trail heads.

You want to ride the trails that we take care of head to black lake area and ride Red Bridge and Bummer Roost. These are maintained by the ATV OFFROAD CLUB of MICHIGAN if you find issues you can go to our web site and let us know at www.atvoffroad.net

We occasionally ride the Little O, which is near our cabin. There are many locations that are not 50" wide, because the trees have gotten bigger over the years. At some locations I have to almost come to a complete stop to get my sport quad through. My point was that the trails needs to be widened to at least 50" like it's supposed to be. The quads made today are much wider than the ones that were made back when these trails were constructed. These are fun trails that need to be widened a little.

So I wonder what benefit we all get from the 63% increase in the standard sticker?:sad:

I agree. I think they need to get with the times and widen them enough to fit the SXS's, and change the laws to allow them as well. These laws were written before SXS's were even introduced. The SXS's are an huge growing sector of the ORV industry. Sooner or later they will have to...so they might as well do it now.

I understand orv does include a golf cart, I am just wondering that since I have never ridden any trails on anything in the north lands that a golf cart will need all the necessary permits etc as a quad or bike? I'm basically going camping and want to take the golf cart just to ride around close to my camp site. Are golf carts a bad idea for some reason?

Golf carts require an ORV License Sticker, unless you are on private property. If you ride on the state ORV trails you will also need an ORV Trail Pass. This may sound ridiculous, but you are required to wear a helmet while riding on a golf cart if your riding on the road or the trails.
