Minnows in a jar worked great... The other good one is to take a plastic 1 gallon ice cream container and fill it with all your guts and scales from the previous day, freeze it. Next time ya go take and drill some good size holes in the container and put it in a hole next to were your fishing. When the ice starts to melt and all those scales start sinking hold on..

We used to do this years ago.. Quite sure both are against the law..

Heres one for ya :yikes:...When I lived in Tennessee they used to mark a spot on the gps,put down about three or four nylons filled with canned cat and dog food, send them to the bottom with weights and then come back the next day and slaughter the crappies and gills, along with a few bass and saugeye.******* but it worked wonder if that is illegal??

used the minnows in the jar for years ice fishing on lsc. cannot see how it would be illegal. the frozen guts in the bucket would be in conflict with the offal prohibition IMO.

It was springtime about 2 years ago and a friend and I were fishing on the shore.. a DNR officer stopped by just to shoot the breeze with us. We gabbed for quite a while and I thought while I had the guy in front of me I'd ask him about the "Jar o' Minnows" when ice fishing...

So when I got done explaining it he paused for a moment. then said.. and I QUOTE...

"Yeah, that'd be illegal. I'm pretty sure you cant do that. I dont know where in the rules it would be covered under but yeah.. you cant do that.
It's illegal baiting or something."

So.. there ya go.. the very very UN-confident word of a dnr officer on
the subject.

All I know is.. if minnows in a jar are illegal.. then those stupid fake weeds people use ought to be illegal too.

**** please note... the bold/italics is what the dnr guy said to me... not my opinion on the matter.

That DNR person is full of something and its not the truth:rolleyes:

I wonder if I put alewives in a jar and sent them down on the riggers if that would be bad. I would get a in trouble because there arent any 'wives on the East side! Nice Thread Paul:D

6inchtrack,

I almost supported doing away with the NRC until I heard that the legislature would be making the decisions. The two worst scenarios are the legislature or courts making natural resouce decisions. The NRC isn't perfect, but the legislature calling the shots is a nightmare. Be careful what you wish for.

Oh by the way, baiting and feeding should have been banned statewide ten years ago. If we were using science to manage our natural resources, it would have been.
Did you even read it?

This doesnÂ’t ask to strip the rule making away from the NRC, but only asks that G should be amended so if a decision that are made that are so unpopular and effects so many people that a Vito process could be implemented.

Why do you feel that baiting and feeding should have been banned years ago?

Think of this for your implication of scientific management...
How far will a bullet from a high powered rifle travel?
What if that was the safe zone from a occupied dwelling?

Now this doesnt belong here in the ice fishing forum, but you posted here so I'll answer here. I'll debate this with you but lets please take it to wildlife management, or sound off.

If you oppose the feeding / baiting ban go to this site and print a letter to send to your elected officials.
E-Mail the link to your friends and family.

wouldn't that be littering?
as far as the glass jar thing, i personally have a problem with too many idiots with galss on the water. don't care if it's legal, just some ones going to break it or throw it away

I'm not sure if its legal or not but a few guys at archery league were talking about using large minnows in a jar to spear pike.. From my understanding the pike would shoot in, hit the jar, knocking itself a little:dizzy:, which made the fish pause, thus making it easier to spear...
One guy also mentioned using a gold fish, which I know is illegal..

Sidenote: this was being done 10-15yrs ago, and worked awesome

Here is the DNR's response to the question.

"Response (Lynne Thoma) - 03/06/2009 10:05 AM
It would not be illegal to do what you are asking and it would not count as a hook as there are not hooks. The biggest issue would be to know if the minnows are certified or not due to the VHS issues, even if the minnows are enclosed in the jar. The next issue would be littering. If the jar falls to the bottom of the lake, that would be considering as littering and a ticket could be issued."

It appears I got confused with my Michigan and Minnesota ice fishing forums. I went back and looked, it is illegal to do this in Minnesota (read it on the Minne Forums). However, according to the DNR's response I got, it is legal to do it in Michigan, assuming you retrieve the jar. I apologize if my initial response caused confusion.

I keep my minnows down under the ice all the time in a five gallon bucket. I just drilled holes in the lid so I can still use the bucket at the bate shop. They would last for months this way but the dnr only allows one week. This is just like a minnow bucket, so what if it's glass. I think it's a great idea and will try it next year. I'm wondering what if you left some air at the top and put a light in it. Hang it by the electric wires like they do for smelt.

Instead of a using a glass jar, Claussen Deli Style pickles come in a 2qt clear plastic jar that is perfect for putting minnows in. The plastic 2qt jar is the perfect size to carry 1/2 dozen golden shiners in. I use them when fishing lakes where I walk in. If you drilled holes in the lid, put a weight in it, and attach a line to it, It would be perfect for an attractor like you guys are talking about.

I have a plastic device made in the late 1960s or early 1970s made for doing this. It looks like two clear plastic bowls that screw together. When a pike bites it it is supposed to slide right back out of their mouth so they hit it again. I have had it for over 30 years, but never used it. It is one of those things I don't think about until I'm already out on the ice staring down the hole.
