It's a deer blind not an outhouse! 😁
When we had our 80A we parked a 30' Jayco and within 50' was an old 4'x4' deer blind I turned it into an outhouse, mounted a 55 gallon plastic barrel to catch rain water, dug a hole placed a floor in the blind and mounted a flush toilet. Worked for about 12 years until we sold, never asked, never told.

Sanitation was in it's infancy during the Civil war.

Alas the medical field wasn't anywhere near where it is today.
Survivors were tough survivors , no doubt!

Fatal illness was big. Very real.
Toilet facilities factored!! More so in camps.
Sick soldiers are not effective soldiers.
Soldiers dying from disease and illness and infection and exposure , not shot ; were still victims of the war.
And not few.
Little different that prewar when "lead poisoning" was a real concern if shot.
With infection rates , it wasn't like todays getting whisked off to treatment .

Did I mention tough survivors?

Plenty of Amish in Gladwin County if memory serves. This question is handled at the County level and wherever the Amish live, I’m sure the regs are dialed in and well known on the County side of things.

Forgiveness not permission, This has been discussed here before how crazy is that to own rural property that much of a not be able to put in your own outhouse, at some point people need to leave you the hell alone!

At my property in the UP I am not going to think twice about putting up an out house with out asking any one!

If there was ever a case for, don't ask,Don't tell this is it, especially for that much land and that area, my buddy is worried about war and the power being off for long periods so he built one just outside of a small town NW of Kalamazoo with no permission and less land!
Sure beats what the homeless& squatters are doing!😯

I d go with the old stand by. I didn’t know there was anything wrong with doing it
