You better be marking your hole after your done for the day. Most spearing shanty's are perminent. They cut their hole and leave the shanty over it for weeks or at the least several days which I am sure you know. I suppose you could spear out of it, just mark your hole when your done.

The problem of spearing out of any flip over is that the door is generally on the other side of the giant hole you are going to cut in the ice. In my buddies guide, there is only about 3' between the tub and the door so that doesn't leave a lot of room for a spearing hole. I guess they usually have the zipper in the back too for zipping two together.

I spear out of my Frabill Trekker. I just make sure when we are gonna pull the fish out, the front door is already unzipped and open. That way when you pull the fish out, you can get it onto the ice out the shanty door in one motion.

I have an Eastman icecube and it works great as a portable shanty for spearing. Open floor plan yet still dark enough inside.

I've speared on 4 different lakes out of my last 5 outings.

Pike sightings for me are a different story

what did you do to mark your holes after you left?

Thanks! I will warn ya though, once you spear a pike ......your gonna be addicted. No two ways about it, you stick a nice fish and you'll be rattled like you just shot a buck with a bow. Becareful, your really playin with fire, and I know how ya like your toys!

Make sure you tie off your spear, and if you can, tie your decoy so it will be in the center of the hole when it is at rest. This will bring the decoy back to center everytime after you twitch it or move it. It will afford you maximum area to get on a fish when it comes in. Good luck and post up if ya try it out.

Mike ,

Theres 2 things I hate to see, one is litter or trash left out on the ice such as empties both beer cans and propane for heaters. The second one is unmarked spearing holes.

I use oak branches because they hold their leaves so long. I had cut a bunch of shooting lanes this Fall for bowhunting and recycled them by bringing them back home and placing them in a pile under my deck. Each branch has 4-6 limbs on it with lot of visable leaves.

I take 2 branches out with me on every trip. When I pack up and am ready to leave, I lay one branch across the hole and prop or wedge the other in an up right position.

Yes, should you choose to spear out of a portable please take all the necessary precautions to protect others from taking the nestea plunge! I'm not a big advocate of spearing out of portables for this reason alone, but it can be done. THe biggest obstacle you'll encounter is height. I don't know how tall the guide series is, but my spear is 5' long, so you'll need a shanty big enough to manuever a large spear. Good luck.

I took this picture a few days ago. The hole was made by augering six 10" holes in the shape of a 6 pack. I then us my spud to break the outside connecting point. It leaves me with several large pieces of ice I lift out of the hole and mark with later. I was fishing/spearing in my Otter Medium Cabin portable shanty. You can see my decoy jigging stick on the ice in front of me, pike spear on the left and perch spear on the right. I never saw a Pike that day at the Fair Haven DNR launch.

I see you have 'old reliable' on there, red white decoy. How do you like that jiggin stick, compared to hangin in off the top of the shanty from one of the poles?

The jigging stick has a hook on the butt end for hanging from the ceiling. That was a slow day so I had plenty of time to play around with it. I believe it draws in Perch as much a Pike. It's basically a big flasher lure for bring in fish. I carved both the decoy and the jigging stick. I believe red and white is the best decoy colors.
