I just got permission to hunt morels on an old dump site. I found a few pounds of morels. Can they be contaminated?

Formal dump site or casual dump site?
Current type landfill capped finished site it is unlikely anything came up through the cap. mycelium doesn't go very deep so all should be well.
Or just leave them alone and don't pick them.

Capped off dumpsite with liner, now there are trees and bushes, dirt on top?

I gotta agree with nostromo, let me take the risk for you. Now on a serious note one of not my best morel spots is a old landfill, I normally find the most on the perimeter of the landfill itself. If I was finding them on the "hills" I might be a little hesitant.

They may have come in with the earth for the protective layer over the site. I'd sniff test em and then if they pass try one or two.

But dig this. A lot of us are drinking water from a huge basin that gets not only rains, but filtered water that runs through cities treatment plants, and from where wildlife goes to the bathroom & screws. AND people drive boats on it with ICE exhaust going into it. It's all filtered again for us.
Wells are a toss up I suppose.
