I just purchased a Mr.Buddy portable heater to use in my deer blind and the clicking sound while engaging the pilot light is really loud. How do you guys light it when your hunting ? Is there a way to light it manually so I do not get that PING sound while trying to hunt ? And finally, how do you like it ?

You can light it with a match. Put it on pilot and hold the knob down then light. use the long kitchen matches or a fireplace lighter. Dont use a regular lighter you will just burn your fingers.

If it gets too warm in your blind dont shut the heater off, just turn it back to the pilot position.

I have used one for several years now and it's awesome. I've never really worried about the sound when lighting it as I'm usually in my blind way before I ever expect any deer to be around. When I use mine in the UP I hook it up to a 20lb tank and I'm good for a week plus up there I use my Big Buddy Heater instead of the little one because it gets really cold and I like being really warm:)

I own 2 of these have had them for a while now... I use and my brother uses the other. I have used both the 1lb and 20 lbs propane with them and never had an issue with them except the hose with the 20 lb tank puts out some kind of oil that clungs the regulator. They have since come out with a hose tat does not do this. If you se it with their rbber hose they have come out with a filter to keep this stuff from clunging the heater up. Also you can get replacements for these and they even refurbish these the ones that get returned to them. Cabelas as even some them once in a while for a lower price. The filters can be found at most Lowes, if you need them they work great. I had to replace the regulator because it can be cleaned out of this stuff from the hose. Bt again they have a new hose but I would still use the filter just in case...

As for lighting it I use a BBQ lighter just Push Down and hold it and put the light where the pilot is and light it that way. you might have to hold the button down till the thermal cople is warm just like when you use the starter to get it going. But if inside your blind at least a box blind I doubt they can hear. I use it because the one blind I use is not completely enclose no windows and a 6 inch gap around the bottom so the noise can get out. I just put it in the blind and leave it there till the season is over the starter that is... it is only a couple of bucks at lowes or hd... Keeps you hands away from the heater...

Hope that helps...

I have a question about those heaters. I have one (the smaller one) and wanted to use it in my blind but want to use a 20# tank. I have a hose that I use on my Weber gas grill its stainless steel braid..(no rodent trouble). It also uses a 1 lb cylinder or 20# tank, would this hose be alright to use or would there be an issue with pressure...maybe to much pressure??? I also have one of those round cat heaters that use a 1# tank for ice fishing..do you guys think it would be safe to use that same hose on??? Just wondering..season is coming up and want to have that blind ready.

Thanks

I use one and love it. the deer don't mind it at all even in my pop up. I use a long reach style lighter to start it and also use a 20lb tank instead of the 1lb disposables. it seems like the little ones always tend to freeze up on me and they die out almost at the wrong time when the deer are around.

I bought one for the icefishing season and will be using it this hunting season. I love it in the shanty sure it will work great it the blind. You make more noise going in and out of blind and loading gun than the heater it isn't a big deal. just don't lite it when you see a deer.

Friend of mine owns one of these and has a problem with the bottle freezing up and it wouldnt stay lit..I was gonna purchase one but am now having second thoughts...
There are literally thousands of buddy heaters used by ice fisherman every winter, so it not the cold that is a problem. All the one pound propane tanks will have frost form on the outside of them at one time or another. As the propane inside the bottle evaporates it cools the liquid propane to a temperature below 32 degrees causing the condensate on the outside of the bottle to freeze.

The problem with you friends heater is most likely dirt or other foreign matter partially clogging the pilot light orifice. Take it apart and blow it out with some low pressure compressed air.

It could also be an issue on not having it on a level surface causing the pilot flame to lose contact with the thermocouple.

Does anyone use a heater in a ground blind in the shotgun zone?

I have always been afraid of using on in my ground blind because I am afraid of spooking the deer. My max shot is probably 75 yards.
You ARE kidding, right? How in the world would a buddy heater spook deer? There is no noise, there is no odor, nothing. The deer I have shot using my buddy heater in a pop-up ground blind didn't care at all about the heater running. They don't know what a heater is, and they don't know that hunters use them. Nuff said.

I would be contacting Mr Heater they have a great customer service and it should be under warranty if it was brand new out of the box. It it won't stay running for long either return it and get another from the store you got it at or again contact Mr Heater I bet they will asist with getting you another one. But I would try the store he got it at and exchange it for another one. Many have had good luck with them. Sounds like the regulator has an issue I would take it back to where he got it and exchange it for another one... They are great to use if it works correctly...

The Buddy Heater has two safety things that make it nice one is a CO2 sensor that senses the oxygen and will shut off if not enough in the place it is used and if you tip it over it will also shut off. Not sure about the Cat Heater and if it has these safety features. That is why the Buddy Heater is safe to use indoors and outdoors with these safety features.

I would like toi get a Big Buddy Heater... It has a fan that pushes the air / heat from the heater it works off of D Batteries I think... And it has 2 inputs so you get even more BTU's out of it.

The deer dont care. One year I managed to rig one under my ladder stand so that I could swing it back up to turn it off. Greatest day ever.

How did you manage that? I've been trying to think of a way to use one on my ladder stand. My thought was to make a shelf that would attach to the seat underneath the cushion and extend out to the side and set the heater next to me.

My grand father used to use a heater, not sure if it was a Buddy Heater or not. One thing to remember, don't light it in the dark. Again, I don't know if he had a Buddy Heater, or if they glow, but his sure did. In the morning, I would look across the field, and his blind looked like a jack-o-lantern. It would glow untill the sun came up.

And I truly doubt if that glow would bother a deer in the least.

I had a problem with one of our heaters and all it was it had a little piece of lint where the pilot light is. Blew it out and problem solved.

The one time I used one up in rifle season I am sure it wasn't a buddy heater but that thing made the propane flame/blowing sound. Like a huussshhhhhhh type noise. Anyways... I figured that they would hear that and either stay away or look the way the noise is coming from and then your spotted.

Sure they wouldn't mind you having your flashlight on in the blind until it is light out either??

Well we ARE talking about the Buddy Heater, now aren't we?

In fact they don't mind. I have had deer around me before and after dark in a blind with a flashlight on. Deer don't know what a flashlight is or what it is used for or that hunters use them. Think about it. The solution for those who are paranoid is simply, don't do it!
