Fishing in 228ft of water with big jig heads twister tails and cut bait of various varieties, perch and smelt worked good for us. Bobbing equals-jiggins of the side of the boat by hand with a Geppu, lined with steel line and a 3 fts mono leader, when you get a fish or check your bait you hand over hand your line in. Fished up in the Keweenaw.

Nice catch, bobbing is a blast. I have boxed many a laker that way when I lived in the Keewenaw. The only thing I didn't like about it was having to haul that anchor up from those depths. Usually bobbed in 220ft down the bank of traverse. We had no need for GPS as we used the stack in Gay to line up with the ridges of the mountain.

Don't know much about this....

Can you explain a geppu?....pictures too maybe?

Not sure on the geppu. A friend of mine had relatives up near L Anse that did some bobbin in keewanaw bay for lakers, and he said the used an oval shaped piece of wood, that had a handle in center(diameter of oval) to hold onto. Then the line you would wrap around by hand a bunch of pegs attached to oval. Maybe thats what it is? Don't know, but he described it like that to me.

Thats pretty close Ralph, I'm headed up to L'anse next week for some bobbing on Keweenaw Bay, my cousin also refers to the bobbin stick as a gibbu (sp). The sticks we use, are made from plastic or wood and are recessed so they fit the wire line around the edges of an oval shaped "stick". We use 1 ounce jigs tipped with half a smelt or cut sucker. And yeah, its a real pain bringing up the anchor from 250 feet.

Got out for my 2nd time this summer with the neighbors, they went out once more the next day after we got the fish in the previous pics a couple weeks earlier and only got one fish:(
We got out this morning around 7am and had our three man limit in about an 1hr 45min. Threw 6 back, biggest one bout 5-6lbs, no monsters this time, these are 3 of the nicer ones.:)
