Are Chipmunks considered "ground squirrels" by DNR?

The reason I'm asking is that chipmunks are not ever mentioned in the hunting guide, but ground squirrels are open year round. The only ground squirrel in MI that I am aware of is the 13 striped ground squirrel. So...... are chipmunks completely protected, or are they always open?

Chipmunks (Tamias)are ground squirrels without that distinction. Not listed in the game digest as such but are classified as a ground squirrel for purposes of removing, Just like the thirteen lined ground squirrel. Too bad they aren't clear in the digest but instead cause people concern of being in violation of removing these damaging critters.

DAMAGE you say,A Chipmunk cannot in any way compare to the damage a red Squirrel can do.Chewed through new soffit
to get in my attic.Loaded every drawer and closet with pine cones in my camper, chewed wires in engine compartment of my truck, destroyed multiple bird houses and feeders. Not to mention hundreds of still green Spruce tree cones that they cut off and eat in my yard.I love my Spruce trees but i am at WAR with Red Squirrels. My garden is a Red Squirrel cemetery, seems when 1 is dispatched 2 take it's place....

Red squirrels are red like the devil for a reason. Chainsaws with Paws. Non colonizing rats. 80% of our squirrel trapping jobs are red squirrels. They aren't cute n fuzzy. They are terrible animals. Get them before they get you. The Fall litter is upon us. Been dealing with a surge of calls on them in the last week and a half.

I miss my german wirehair Ty. He was a munk machine. His favorite was chasing them to a downspout, then chewing up to 5' (high as he could bite). Stopped replacing the downspouts after three times and put a mesh screen over the bottom. Ty would consume most of the chipmunks he dispatched, but he did bring back 3 or 4 like a cat, all full of pride and accomplishment.

I've gotten 2 in a downspout myself. They'd come running around a corner of the house I'd happen to be standing at and they look for the first place or hole to hide in. Bad choice by them because I quickly plugged the end and then drowned the mothas, lol.

I declared war with the Reds this summer thinking I can get them before they eat all the fresh Tamarack cones this year. Wrong, they all came from a direction I did not expect. Probably had the whole township over due to being these are the only ones around. At least they make their chirps upon arrival. They do know when you are after them!
