Savage at one time had a 30-30 bolt gun and the 303 British along with a couple others were in bolt guns, so it's doable.

Personally don't see it happening with any of the major makers thou.

 

My bet would be Ruger on the American platform. Really surprised they don't have one already.

 

I don't think Ruger/Marlin view the bolt action in Buck .360 as a profitable option. The competition, especially from some very nice shotgun platforms, is very strong. Hard core deer and hog hunters swear by shotguns, especially in the south and midwest. Just sayin......

 

What's the need? Aren't the 350 legend and 360 buckhammer nearly identical ballistically? Just rimmed and rimless?

I can't find anything on case capacity for the 360 but should be 4-5gr more than the 350. Turn that loose in a bolt gun and make her shine.

 

Rimmed cases aren't really an ideal round for a bolt gun. I would be really surprised if a major manufacturer brought one out.

 

looking at this article on the 340 savage 30-30, it looks like the a bolt would need some work to allow the case head to feed up and under the extractor. I don't think I'd totally relie on the case mouth headspacing until the case snapped over a a Savage type extractor if it was crimped heavy.

Perhaps a bolt gun in .400 Legend is what you want.

 

The 360 buck hammer is what the 350 legend should have been, minus the rim. If the 350 would have used a 308 win. size case head, 1.800 case length, and .357/.358 diameter bullets then it would have been about all it could be. But then again if Winchester would have done that then others wouldn't be able to improve upon it and sell even more rifles ammo and components when people "upgrade".

Only bolt action I've ever seen has been Savage 340 30-30 you could spend the money and have a gunsmith convert it....but the side of the receiver scope mount just doesn't appeal me never has...

 

I have an old British 303 that I may try to convert to the 360 BH.

The 303 Brit is a rimmed round. Tens of millions were made and used in WW1 and WW2. There were also a number of other bolt action rifles firing rimmed rounds, OF course it can be done. It makes sense since the 360 buckhammer is significantly more powerful than the 350 legend. I am just shocked that someone has not done it already. A reasonably priced bolt action (Mossberg, Ruger) should sell like hotcakes.

 

I'm kinda surprised Ruger hasn't already released one on the American platform.

 

About the only way for a 360 Buckhammer to be use in a bolt action would be to turn the rim off like what is done to the 45 Raptor from 460 S&W. There would also be a problem with how much the case tapers and feeding would be a problem for sure.
But it would make a good cartridge if the brass could be pushed to 60'000 psi !

 

The Russians figured out how to make a rimmed cartridge work in a bolt action. I'm pretty sure Ruger could figure it out also.🤔

 

30-40 Krag also worked good in a bolt action.😉

 

Just saying it's been done successfully for a very long time. Most people act like it is some kind of insurmountable task.

 

Heym made their bolt actions in many rimmed cases as well. And the Magnum was the big dangerous game gun, so they obviously fed well.

 

Got a bug in my azz and dug out a SA 308 Savage magazine, stuffed three 360 rounds in it, but there is some binding on the first two rims someplace and they wouldn't feed up. Also Feed lips are too wide and the two rounds wanted to pop out. Maybe a 22-250 mag would be better and I have one of those someplace if I ever can find it.

Had my Ruger 77 40x1.8 on the bench, 3 dummy rounds staggered in mag box fine, bolt picked them up enough for the extractor to grab and eject but bolt face would need to be opened a little for the bigger casehead.

Next i tried a mag bolt but the extractor is cut back to far and wouldn't grab the casehead. So swapped extractors with the standard bolt which picked and fed 3 rounds but wouldn't eject the 3rd round. Didn't have time to deep dive into it today to see why.

I haven't gave up on the Savage yet, have to find a SA mag bolthead but after seeing how the 77 did, might just need to open a std face bolthead up and maybe do some extractor work.

 

I bet someone could re-barrel something like this and make a 360BH bolt action.🤔

 

Working pressure of a 30-30 is around 42'000 psi. A 360 Buchhammer is 50'000 psi.
A gun built for a 30-30 working pressure is a little weaker. I wouldn''t want to put my face behind the bolt of Steven 30-30 rechambered to 360 Buckhammer. Not much of a diffrence but might be enough for a few shots but when or if it does fail.
