Going rate for Pent 1 or 2's is $200-$300 depending on bells & whistles. Ebay usually has them in that price range, BUT I'd rather buy locally if possible. You never know what your going to get on e-bay when buying used!
I see Dell now has new ones starting at $699 w/dvd and free shipping.

I have finally been able to contact a friend that builds and sells laptops to meet the need of a user and his prices are low! I will be getting mine from him.
If anyone is in need of a used laptop at a good price, just PM me and I can get you in contact with him.

Please don't take offense to this push button, but I think $1,000 is too much. Computer technology changes so fast everything is nearly obsolete by the time you get it home. Duckman was right about the new dells the Inspiron 1100 comes with a 1.4 GHz processor and 256 of ram for only $719. I am looking to spend 400-500

If you're looking to get a good deal on a new laptop but aren't in a hurry, you might want to go to FatWallet Hot Deals. Check the site daily (or more often) and you might find something you're interested in. I just hooked my sister up with an Inspiron 5100, P4 2.8 Ghz, 15.0 XGA, 512 Mb RAM, CD-RW (I think) for about $699 + tax. And I got an IBM R40 P4 - 1.3 Mobile, 15.0 WXGA, 256 Mb RAM, DVD for about $1000.

Used lappy's are risky and repairs are expensive, so you might want to think about buying new.
