Been thinking about getting a wirehair. I have a seven year old shorthair that is wonderful and was thinking of getting her a companion. Has anyone had experience with the wirehairs, and is there any good dealers here in Michigan.

I've had quite a bit of experience with hunting/training 3 different wirehairs. I bought a male pup from the late Carl Schnell(Schnellberg Kennels of Washington, Mi.) in the mid-70's and had him for 14 years. It really was a Wirehaired Pointing Griffin but at that time they all were registered as GWP's. One of my best friends has bought two females from his kennels. His current one is now 10 years old, and he's already planning on getting another pup out of this bloodline in the spring.
I found all of them to be very good dogs. Very trainable, gentle, friendly, good house dogs, great with kids, playful, you name it.
All were/are great grouse & woodcock dogs, and did well on our annual Iowa pheasant hunts. My buddy used his on waterfowl, and they were capable. Just not to the level of the retriever breeds. I never tried my male on waterfowl as I have always kept a Lab for that.
What I liked the most about them is that they hunted slower & closer than the GSP I grew up with, and the GSP's that another buddy of mine has had.

I got my Wirehair 4 years ago, after owning German Shepherds for 30 years. It has been a very good decision, he is a good hunter, loves children, and has personality plus. He is intelligent, a very good house dog. He can be a little stubborn, is tough on fured animals in the woods[ woodchucks, raccoons]. He has been a very healthy dog. There are some good breeders in Michigan. The G.W.P. club of Detroit has some very knowledgeable breeders in it, www.fdgwpc.org.
