Whats the Deal with I-68 forms???

Ok, I'm thinking bout getting my ONT license and fishing the other side of the pond next year, and I'm trying to figure out everything I need.

Do I need any kind of paperwork in order to travel into CA waters? Is the I68 form needed to get back into US waters? I'm asking this because i have read about people from MI getting I68 forms.... this confuses me because as I read on the INS website:

Purpose of Form: If the persons named hereon seek to enter the United States by other means or seek to enter the United States for other purposes of (if not United States citizens or lawful permanent residents of the United States), intends to remain in the U.S. in excess of 72 hours, or intends to travel beyond nearby shopping areas, nearby residential neighborhoods, or other similar areas adjacent to the immediate shore of the U.S., then they must apply for admission at a U.S. Port-of-Entry.

Anyone know whats exactly going on??

I picked up an I-68 in 2002 from the INS office at the Ambassador Bridge. It is a document that isn`t required from Canada, rather, it is a US document that allows u access into this country via water without checking in at customs. For example. You make a run to Belle River to fish for `skies and on your way back you are stopped by the INS when u enter american waters. If every one on board has a valid I-68 they let u go. If not, they can make u check in at customs. One of which is at the bridge and I believe the other closest one is in Algonac. Basically it is a pre check for customs. I didn`t get one in 03 because I didn`t get a canadian license. In all my years fishing StClair I have yet to see an INS boat on the water. In my opinion it is for raising $$$$$$. A terrorists isn`t gonna get one anyway.

Amen; have yet to be stopped. Waste of money and in my humble opinion - a joke.
I got one in '02, but didn't renew it last year. Made tons of trips back and forth across the border on the River and Lake Erie both years and never saw a need for it.

It did come in handy this fall, though. We drove over to Colchester to fish for perch, and I left my driver's license at home. When asked for photo ID on the way back into the US, all I had was my expired I-68 and my Sam's Club card. I wouldn't suggest making a habit of this, but they did let me back in. :D
I have never got an I-68. It says (if not United States citizens or lawful permanent residents of the United States). In my opinion, being a U.S. citizen I don't need one. I do carry my birth certificate so I can show proof of citizenship if I ever do get stopped coming back accross.

As you know, when fishing Canadian waters all you'll need is a Canadian license, unless you plan to anchor. If anchoring then you'll need to go to a Canada Customs dock or a municipal dock and call 1-800-CAN-PASS. You can call right from your cell phone in the boat and they will ask for your boat registration number and where you live as well as a few other of the usual questions. Then they will give you a canpass number to write down in case you get checked while over there. This number is also good if you want to so on shore and do some running around.

I have fished alot over there the last couple years and that's all I've done........ I'm no authority on this subject by any means. Just my thoughts...............................Bob B.

I hope everyone have a safe and Merry Christmas as well as a Happy New Year.
