Was having a conversation with a coworker a few days ago about what calibers we like for deer in Zone 3. My friend Bill uses a .450 bushmaster and he's a pretty decent shot. He claims his effective range for his gun is around 300 yards and I tend to believe him. When I told him that I like my Marlin 1894 rifle in .44 mag he replied "but it's only good for about 125 yards". Don't misunderstand, the conversation was friendly. So I asked Bill what was the farthest shot he has ever taken on a deer and made a kill? He said around 90 yards was his farthest.
That got me thinking about the distance of my own kills. I figure I've killed probably 70 deer in my lifetime. I've taken them with a compound bow, 12 gauge shotgun, .50 caliber muzzleloader, 7MM mag rifle, and .44 mag rifle. My longest kill was around 100 yards and with the 7MM. My average kill though, with all the weapons combined that I've listed, is about 10 - 15 yards.
My question is what weapons have you used, what is your farthest confirmed kill, and what is the average for all your kills combined? For the sake of this discussion let's only list Whitetail kills east of the Mississippi River
