I'm going up to Mullet and Burt lake sometime in August. I have never been there at any point in my life. I am taking a 16ft "walleye" boat with a trolling motor. We will be doing some worm fishing for anything that bites (smallmouth, crappie, bluegill). Basically we won't be targeting any specific species. But our goal was to hopefully target some walleye (if they even exist in these lakes, or are prevalent enough for me to catch). I have never fished for walleye in any way shape or form. Sooo.....
1) are there walleye in these lakes, and if are there enough that I can hope to catch a few in the week that I am up there.
2) I have lots of body baits I could troll with (and planer boards from big-lake salmon fishing). I don't have jigs or worm harness, but would be willing to purchase some. So what is the best presentation if I were targeting walleye?

Basically I am looking for any tips on catching walleye in these 2 lakes in August.
Thanks in advance

Yes there are walleye. If you don't want to buy crawler harnesses, fishing with regular live bait over a weed bed, or trolling rapalas have been my best bets.
Yep, I'm willing to buy some crawler harnesses, just not sure how to fish them. In a nutshell how does one fish a crawler harness.
What is good live bait? Crawlers? minnows? both?
Also what is a good speed range for trolling some rapalas?

Can't help you with Mullett Lake but I have fished Burt often in August. I usually run a crawler harness 2-3 behind a bottom bouncer. Most of the lake I fish (west side) you can drag a crawler on the bottom all day without snagging any weeds. You will catch gobs of zebra mussels on occasion though.

I generally fish in 25 to 40 FOW so make sure you have different weights for the different depths....

I trolled a couple times in my kayak last year and caught a few walleyes. You will probably catch a few decent sized perch too.

Bottom bouncers and harnesses for eyes.trolling stick baits can be productive plus you might pick up pike or trout.caught a few nice bows trolling sticks.

This is mullet.my father used to have a cottage on the west side of the lake.

I fish Mullett in July and Aug. every year. Walleye fishing is good, but you have to be able to find them, I caught them in 70 ft. of water suspended and on the bottom in 10 ft. of water. I do not use bait, all lures, either trolling or jigging. Cover a lot of water and once you find them they tend to stay in that area untill there is a major cold front or the forage moves. Perch fishing is also very good but you have to find the bigger ones, they tend to school by size, so if you'er catching a lot of small ones move and find another school, and still no bait, small jigging spoon will catch plenty of perch.

I have had my best luck on mullett slow trolling a crawler harness , the best colors have been red beads & silver blade or a northland blue halographic blade with blue beads anything that matches the forage should be good best place to try is in front of state park or off of dodge point. good luck

Thanks for the input guys. I appreciate it. It sounds like I will have to get myself some crawler harnesses, some bottom bouncing rigs, and some jigs. I have plenty of body baits that swim at various depths and planer boards with dive bomb weights from salmon fishing lake Michigan, so I should be good there. I will assume there will be a bait shop or shops handy for crawlers and minnows. I'm getting excited. I may even try some bass fishing which I'm not real fond of...

Don't forget you trout stuff, there is a good supply of Rainbows and Brown in the deeper water off Red Pine point. I pick a few up on Stinger spoons with Mini disc and leadcore down in 60 to 80 ft. while fishing for Walleye, I do catch Walleye that deep too.
