Forth of July 2003 Fishing at the 9-mile can off Alpena on "FootLoose". We boated a 18.3 pound Laker. I have been fishing Lake Huron for a long time and have never heard of a Laker this big on Lake Huron. The fish is mounted and is on display at Alpena Electric Motor on M32 in Alpena.

Then I was talking with Jason from "Rawhide", he said he had landed a sixteen or seventeen pound Laker off Harrisville a week or two before.

Then this winter I heard second hand a guy had pulled a 17.5 pound laker through the ice off Pinconning in the Saginaw Bay.

These are the biggest lakers I have heard of on Lake Huron. I know they get alot bigger on the Big lake.

What is a big Lake Huron "Laker".

Only Master Angler Laker entered for Lake Huron in 2003. It was just shy of 21 lbs.

It is the largest one reported to the DNR since 1999 where a guy got a 28 lb laker. But that 28 lb laker is messed up, It says Marquette county, but caught in L. Huron.

The fish gods rewarded us that day, cause as we were motoring out, we found a boat dead in the water and dragged them in which took a good 1/2 hour out of our fishing time. The Labatt the guys gave us for towing them in.

I have caught two in the mid 20's. This was about 6 yrs ago. One was in Harbor Beach and another in Pt Austin. Before fishcatchers, I used to fish my Dodgers at 3.5 mph and "spin" them for kings. Both fish hit spinning dodgers on divers. Go figure.

Besides Stannard Rock in Lake Superior, the waters off the Thumb produce some of the largest Lake Trout in the state. 15-18lb class fish used to be very common off the reef. We have broken 18+lbs (MasterAng) many times and one at 21.7 lbs in the late 80s. These big guys are very old and becoming more and more of an oddity, most off the LTs the last couple years, as Termie said average 8-12lbs. There has been a 24 & 25 caught around us in the last couple years as well.

West Side: Another friend pulled a 28lb out of Grand Haven in May a few years back...
