Last week I posted a thread about how a couple of co workers told me they were going to bait even though it was illegal. (do you remember)
Well where they were hunting there was a guy who owned 5 acres surrounded by state land. Apperantly he did not like other people other than him and his buddies hunting there so he called the DNR and made a complaint. (not sure what the complaint was).
Well the CO walked up on one of the guys I work with and caught him hunting over bait.
Well he didn't get a ticket for baiting, he was given a warning. He did though get a ticket for not having his name and address on his stand.
He told me the CO told him to kick the bait around so it wasn't in a pile.

Looks like baiting is just an inconvienence to the DNR. Why have a ban if it is going to be over looked like going 5 MPH over the speed limit?

how much was the fine for no name on the stand? that is one rule i will never follow. there is no way im going to give a thief my address so they can just come to my house and get some more huntng gear.
It's up to the judge. Same as all game law violations, max 500 fine and/or 90 days in jail. The bigger question is do you have a job that requires you not to have any misdemeanors.

A ticket for baiting with 2 lbs would be the same ticket if he had 100 lbs. . . The co doesnt decide the "max" penalty. . sorry, just the way it works. .
Yeah, I know that fines are levied at the court level. What I meant was that the CO should have hit him with the maximum of what is in his control. As in, write him up for every violation possible. With leniency like this, people are much more apt to break the law. I would hate to push 6inchtrack over the edge and get him back into baiting- but this might be the straw that broke the camel's back. No response on a baiting thread after this amount of time has me wondering....is he out trying to find the best deal possible on a bag of corn right now?

Depending on the circumstances that probably should happen. But most LEOs including COs probably give people some type of break unless they act badly. Like I said before, the weekly reports usually have cases where a ticket was written for one of multiple violations and warnings for the rest. I don't know what they do when they catch someone drinking in their truck at night with a loaded gun on the seat, no drivers license, and expired insurance. Those types probably don't get as much of a break.

Well I will just say that the CO's told the guy the only reason they were even in the area is because a complaint was called in. I don't know what the complaint was, but the guy probably gave the CO the upmost respect, he is a very well mannered person. That might of looked good to the CO and could be why he did not hit him for the bait.
