Weed killer: Plan could clear up Kawkawlin River

If a permit is approved by the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality, the Kawkawlin would be among the first rivers to be treated for weeds in the state.
The DEQ grants about 1,700 permits a year for similar treatment projects, but most of those are for lakes and ponds, said Eric Bacon, environmental quality analyst for the agency in Lansing. The few programs that involve river treatments are for portions of rivers that are impounded by dams, not free-flowing rivers like the Kawkawlin, which flows into the Saginaw Bay, Bacon said.
