With this winter weather on the way there is suppose to be a
bunch of snow with it. I have always been told that the Snow
is a bad thing.

With the lakes (here in southern MI) having very little ice.
Then getting a bunch of snow on them forms an Insulation
and won't freeze proper. The temps could drop down into
the single digits but it still doesn't form more Ice.

Any truth to what I have been told or is this an old wifes tale???

IceDaddy, you got it right, it's just like throwing a blanket on the ice. The cold air can't get to the ice to make it any thicker.
Another thing, if we get a lot of snow, the weight will crack the ice then the snow turns to a big slurpee.
Then when it freezes over again you don't have the clear solid ice, so it is not as strong.

More often than not if we only get less that 6 inches at a time the wind seems to clear the lake sort of speak from most insulating snow. So unless we get more than 6 inches in a single snow fall I dont typically worry to much about it.

Actually, there is only going to be a little bit of snow.....there will be some light snow showers for a few days, but, that's it, shouldn't accumilate to much. It's an artic high pressure, which is usually the cooperate for a sudden cold blast, it's usually dry, and cold, as will this one. Which is very good for ice making:)

Ice will still form with a blanket of snow on it, as long as the
temps stay below freezing. It just slows the process down
quite a bit.
