Vexilar FL8 issues

Last year while smelt fishing I noticed all of a sudden that I had to turn my gain way up (like to 8 or 9) to mark my hali. The season before it was not a problem to mark it on a gain setting of 4 in 50ft. Now this season I can't even mark large horizontal jigs like a jigging rap any deeper than 30'. The mark is visible as it drops then when it hit 30' at the bottom of the circle viewer it just disappears. Then yesterday it seemed to just ***** the bed all together, not being able to give a solid bottom reading in 45 feet with the gain turned up to 8. I'm frustrated! The bays on the big lake just froze and I've come to rely on this thing more than I should. Anyone think they can help me trouble shoot the problem?

I'd start by making sure battery is fully charged and good connection, that's when mine seems to have the most problems, then maybe try finding a transducer to borrow to see if that fixes it. Last but not least is sending the unit in, there customer service department is excellent!!! I had to get a new motor in mine a couple winters ago and for around $80 I was back fishing in about a week.
Good Luck

Seem to have the same problem. Seem to be always messing with my gain at first, like it needs to warm up or something, which make no sense. Seem every time I go out ,fishing the same spot, my gain is set differnt.

them are battery issues... your battery may show a full charge but don't hold one for very long... Start cheep and get a new battery... then if that don't work then its the transducer...

How long do those batteries last? I bought a new one about two seasons ago and use the old one and the new one in rotation and the problem seems to be the same with both batteries. Also, it doesn't seem to matter if there is a full charge or not.

Maybe your charger is shot.

had the same exact issues it was the puck/transducer, mine you could jiggle the wire/puck and it would react so i knew what it was, i run my batts till there almost totally dead and can still read/see lure, those cheap batts dont last but a year if your lucky, i buy heavy the duty 1s like moultry feeders, charge last way longer and so does the batt's life, after i got the new transducer i couldnt beleive how good i could see my lure and bottom, as in the lure dont disapear in the bottom red zone no more!! showed me how bad my puck was

I was having similar problems with mine and although it seems like a battery problem I verified my charge with a good volt meter and voltage was ok. I went ahead and ordered the tri beam transducer and it's working better than it ever has.
