Understanding spearing Regs...Trout Lakes?

494 Views 4 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  jasonmichalski
Reading the fishing guide, it appears that spearing for Pike is not lawful on trout lakes. Yet I know a few designated trout lakes such as Betsie Lake in Benzie and Portage Lake in Manistee where spearing is a regular activity.

I see no exceptions for these water bodies in the regs.

What am I missing in the reg interpretation. I'm basing it on these maps found on the DNR website:
http://www.michigan.gov/documents/dnr/32_416024_7.pdf
http://www.michigan.gov/documents/dnr/29_416020_7.pdf

This map shows the key, which highlights the aforementioned lakes as trout lakes.

Betsie and portage are type F lakes. Only Type A and D are Designated Trout Lakes
Bingo, you have to read two parts of the reg book to find that gem, lakes with Trout are legal to spear for the most part, if you reread the spearing note it says no spearing on “Designated Trout lakes” that’s the part your missing.

I guess I figured all trout lakes were designated trout lakes.

Most people do, it’s a confusing note because if you don’t read the definition of a Designated Trout lake, you would have no idea only two types are actually designated lakes, and the reason is in the other types Trout aren’t the primary species in the lake.
