During the fall of 2003 COs John Huspen and Chuck McPherson conducted an investigation of a trumpeter swan that was shot and killed in the Grayling area and another that was shot and wounded. After two trials, a successful prosecution was reached. The defendant was found guilty and ordered to pay $1,500 restitution, additional fines and costs, lost his hunting license for one year, was sentenced to 100 hours community service, and must retake a hunter safety course. This may be the first successful prosecution for the killing of a trumpeter swan in Michigan in over 100 years.
