Trash patrol can make a difference

Something was moving in the grass near the spot where the fish rose, and when I walked up a tiny bird fluttered a couple of feet off the bank and landed in the water, where it struggled to get farther away from me.

Guessing it was caught in fishing line, I used my rod tip to scoop under the bird. Sure enough, the rod caught on a piece of monofilament and let me to bring the little creature close enough that I could kneel down and get hold of it.
It was a semipalmated sandpiper, a shorebird not much bigger than a sparrow, and it had managed to wrap its neck, beak and right wing in a 10-foot length of line that had three or four big split shots attached.
