our 1.5 year old GWP is having a hard time distinguishing between a live bird and a dead bird. his nose is so keen when he finds a scent he locks up. our problem is after we shoot a bird he will find it but he points it again instead of retrieving.

Any tips?

He is still a young dog. If you want him to retrieve dead for you I would encourage him to move up on the bird after the kill and maybe pick it up for him and put it in his mouth if need be. After some experiance he will figure out himself the difference from a live and dead bird scent.
