I have my new Dog Rusty listening real good in the house, but outside is a differant story. What is a good video out there for learning how to get a start on training a dog in the field. He points the cat real well as well a the few birds we have run across on the edge of the field, but this is all on the leash stuff, if I take him off, we will be long gone before I can wet my lips to whistle for him.

He is a 1.5 year old Britt Sorry I left this part out earlier.

Once you get him where he will listen on the leash go to a check cord after he has that down go to a check cord shock collar combo then when he gets that down go to a shock collar only the bottom line is he knows you DONT have control you need to prove you do where are you located I will do a free lesson to give you a pointer here and there if you wanna

Well the one time he got away, he ran big, up the road almost a mile actually more, he was headed back when I found him. You could see where he wanted the woods in a bad way, but would give up after like 20 foot of deep snow, then back to the road and running.

I live in Blanchard, about 23 miles west of Mount Pleasant on M-20 and 4 miles south of Remus just off M-66

Should have sit and come down pat under most all situations before field work. Have trained 2 water spaniels never a britney though. 1.5 years will be a tough train imo. Best to have the basics especially obidience done by 6 months. You should invest in a shock collar, will make this job 10 times easier. work on sit and come with the shock collar first then go to the field.
good luck

Frantz,

You need to get him to listen on and off the leash. Do as timbergsp has said. Work on this until spring. Not only will this give you a handle on your dog he will bond with you. The bond is the most important thing here. He needs to trust and like you. Being that this is a rescue dog he probably has not bonded with a human. Yard work him to death. Love him to death. Then in the spring take him somewhere he can run to his hearts content. If he still does not listen he will at least have the fundamentals in place for some more serious training.

I personaly do not agree with the age thing I took a pointer one time that was 2.5 the guy was going to shoot said it was not worth nothing and could not be trained he is one of the nicer dogs that I co-own now. I start my dogs at between 12 and 17 months depending on the dog from the time I bring him home till then I just love them to death and let them know I am there best buddy. Frantz I think you should get with a trainer let them do some one on one with you and the britt. I do one on one and there is a guy in Maybee by Dundee named Scott Townsend that also does. I am sure some of the guys here can and would lead you to another trainer .

(this rule does not apply with beagles that I start and 6 week or when ever I get them)

FieldWalker, I will be taking you up on the offer as soon as the weather is decent for it. I took him for a long walk and he is learning to heal, but the crust on the snow was starting to tear him up, so we stayed on the road on a leash,

I am looking towards the future and was thinking of the Innotek ADV-300P collar, I see where I can get one for about $150 new. Is that a good choice? Seems light enough.

Again, thanks to all you guys/(gals?) for the help, it has helped both of us a great deal.

Do yourself a favor and stay away from Innotec. They are for the most part junk. Yes there will be people that have had good luck with them, although I don't know of any that have. And I know quite a few that have tried them including me. Using them around the yard may work, but get them in the woods banging around and they don't last long. Also they are unrepairable. If they are under warranty they will replace them. I have had good luck with their bird launchers though.

And if you want something to use in the woods you want to get one with a one mile range if you want it to carry any distance through the woods. Those ratings are for open terrain. In the woods and hills a short range model will be near useless. I put my money on Tri-tronics. Dogtra seems to be doing well for some trialers I know using them now also. Try The Collar Clinic in Traverse for a used one if you are looking to save money.

If you are looking toward the future stay away from innotek get a cheaper tri-tronics if you have to the sport 50 is a nice collar but the best for you would be a classic 70 you wont need one till spring so save up and get a good one so you dont have to replace it later any way

You can also buy refurbished (?spelling?) collars, which are obviously less than new. I believe someone near Traverse City has a shop/store which sells such collars. E-bay also may be a good place to check.

I would go with Tri-tronics. I have the 65s-bpr, which is the beeper and training collar in one. It runs about 349, but if you get it through Lion Country Supply you get $20 off if you spend a certain amount. Take a look at any of the collars and get opinions by doing a search on here for training collars.

They have some sales going on right now.

Check out the Collar Clinic in Traverse City:
http://www.collarclinic.com/index1.html

As for brands, just like dogs, different ones work for different people. I, myself use the Innotek brand. I have two ADV-1000's and a multi-purpose CS-16000. I can use the 16000 for both dogs and remote launchers (which I will be adding soon). I have had no problems with all three collars and have had them for over two years now. I use the ADV collars for yard training and general purpose conditioning.

Check out Innotek here:
http://sportdog.innotek.net/

I have used some older Tri-Tronics collars for my rottweilers and they worked great as well. I just liked the features of the Innotek collars and their ability to handle the variety of accessories.

Also, be sure to check out the local stores (Cabelas and Bass Pro) as they occasionally have pretty decent sales on all brands. You may also want to check out their websites.

Here is my boy Grady with one of the ADV collars on:

Choices, choices, choices.... I see Dogtra out there as well, they seem to be well built and about mid range in price between Innotek and TriTronics. I am going to give the clinic in TC a call and see what they suggest as well. Thanks for the comments, suggestions and again for all the help.

Well, the clinic said to avoid the Innotek for any kind of field use, they are good units, but do not hold up as well as the Dogtra and TriTronics so I am currently looking at the Dogtra 200 NCP as it is a reasonable price that I can save for ($189) shipped.

Thanks for the info and support Scott, I will be getting with you once things are better weather wise. I took Rusty out for about an hour on the long leash today, did the 1/2 hitch or whatever the loop is called around and under his rear quarters, he heeled real well and to the point where I only had to remind him on occasion, but the busting through the snow crust was a bit much for both of us. I am going to Jays tomorrow as they really, really recommend the SportDog collars WWW.sportdog.net in case anyone else has an interest. Don't try Sportdog.com as Innotek has that redirected to their site, sportdog.innotek.net. Based on that and other discussions both here and on the phone, I will not be going near Innotek. I know it is business, but still hokie at best.
