I've still got schooleys that i bought 30 years ago. Talk about bang for a buck!

I've got a $70 thorne bros deadstick that i fish live minnows with...but i never ever icefish without a schooley in my hand.

What is it like if you hook into a real fish with that. I would guess with no drag and no give in the rod that the occasional fat walter breaks your heart. I admit I just cant bring myself to use the schooly because I think they look stupid. Ive been shown up by buddies with them before fishing gills on a light bite, but I still cant do it. If I get those and like them it just proves how dumb I am for all the money ive spent. And everyone knows that expensive ice fishing gear really helps with the ladies.

You keep the thumbscrew loose enough and apply drag manually. I keep the reel very loose and have my thumb against it when i set hook.

Both my daughters are experts with one.

How about the spud, bucket, sled, auger, creepers, tip-up, string, hook, stick and of course beer? the schooley is just an improvement of the lowly stick.
I never took, 8 spuds, 8 augers, 8 sleds.. with me but I head out with 8 Schooley style rods every time...

Here are the results... (all 2013 pictures)

Don't know how I would do without! I love taking the spinning reel guys to Schooley over and over again as well!

Good luck and spring bobbers down, to all!!

Ya just can't beat made in Michigan either!

Also just a tip, when the eyelet falls of the end of that spring bobber, take a regular tip-top, squeeze it flat and slide it on the end of the spring, the lighter the better, I knock out the middle ring on the eye to make it lighter...

I do the exact same thing. Even in deeper water I just do hand over fist and lay line off to the side to reel. Love them.

i ve used in the days we had plenty ice along with rods made from dowel rods with 2 l screws you wrapped line around. caught many walleye and perch and smelt off leaminton and thames river where depths exceeded 25 ft without any problems. too many guys here nowadays get caught up in buying rods with spinning reels because big buisiness promotes that way. Kinda sad. its impossible to go anywhere now and and try to find the old orange dowel 2$ rods for sale, but you can find a spincasting reel and small rod anywhere that should be used for casting. lol

Those rods on ebay are exactly what im talking about. schooleys are great too. do u think the fish below care what kinda rod your hook is attached too? dont forget, its not the tools that make the mechanic.

Catchmore Ice Fishing Rod Combo

made in MICHIGAN , rod go's for around 10 bucks, combo around 12 to 15 and you get a decent ultralight reel for soft water

If you strech your line against the drag when you start fishing and use a swivel, you won't have a line twist problem, I never open the bail on my ice tackle, pull out my line to depth, no problems, memory gone.
