What are you guys using on the piers for thermometers?? Do you just read surface temp or do you have something that will sink down to tak temps closer to the bottom?
Not to be sarcastic by any means. I did not have a temp gauge. I was running the bait as close to the bottom as possible. When I wanted to check the temp I'd grab the bait and feel the metal. It was much cooler than my hand or fingers that was cool from being out in the fog and wind. I noticed just prior to my leaving that the last time I checked the bait it was extremely warmer than before the sunrise. So, to answer your question. Nothing accurate. Only by feel
I use a little temp sensor I picked up to read the surface temps. It works great. You have to get really close to the water though, or bring a bucket of the water up to you to get the most accurate reading.

Several years ago I was put on to Vexilar Deptherms. Just clip on to line and flip it out (DON'T CAST IT).
Or you can use a free floating aquarium thermo taped to a kell sinker.
