Sturgeon spearing lottery coming soon

CHEBOYGAN -- Anglers soon can apply for a lottery for sturgeon spearing licenses on Black Lake.
The Michigan Department of Natural Resources will accept applications to the annual lottery between Jan. 12 and 16. Anyone interested may register by calling the DNR at (989) 732-3541, or by applying in person at the agency's Gaylord Operations Service Center.

The limited sturgeon spearing season on Black Lake in Cheboygan and Presque Isle counties opens Feb. 7 and runs through Feb. 15. The season ends when the maximum of five speared fish is reached.

A total of 225 anglers, or 25 per day, will be chosen by lottery to participate. The lottery drawing will be at 7 p.m. on Jan. 17 at Chateau North, 10621 Twin Lakes Rd. in Cheboygan.

Last year, 704 people registered for the lottery, but no fish were taken during the nine-day season in 2008. Poor water clarity is blamed for the lack of speared sturgeon, officials said.
