I sent an email to the NRC and received this answer this morning:

"That subsection (f), of Wildlife Conservation Order section 3.100 is due to be rescinded on May 12, 2017. I have forwarded your email on to the Wildlife Division to respond to your questions. Thank you."

There was no indication that it will be renewed so it is my belief that we need to raise our voices to the Wildlife Division, our MI representatives, MUCC, retailers, Conservation Clubs etc to get this regulation finalized into regulation. There is no logical reason to rescind this regulation and it is also my belief DNR will fight to allow this to be rescinded since they fought the rule for five years prior to passing of three year trial.

Time to raise your voice fellow hunters!

I wonder if the Sandhill crane issue is about creating a season for them. Down south they call them "ribeye in the sky"!

I know! That is the fault of hunters that choose not to hunt them and don't think we have to stick together on all issues whether we take part or not. It's part of the "slow erosion" of hunting privileges.

I am leaning towards just making the current law permanent, then, seeking to have it expanded. Kinda like a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.

That's cool. As long as you have someone's ear, get the re-up of the current rules and then possibly add a select few cartridges in the future.

Received this reply from my State Senator today:

Thanks for contacting my office, and I really appreciate your email regarding this issue. I apologize for the delayed response as I’ve been really busy with things going on in Lansing. I want you to know I fully support this regulation and I will pass this onto the commission. Additionally, I’ll let my colleagues know about this.

We've been pushing for a season for years. We sure could use one in the EUP. They are here by the thousands in the spring and fall.

If the DNR was so quick to pass the full inclusion of xbows into the regular bow season to get more hunters out into the woods, I see no reason that they won't pass the straight wall cartridges rule fully for the exact same reason. It would make no sense if they reversed their decision on the subject, and made them illegal once again in the shotgun zone. I hunt in the southern zone, and I'm glad that they made them legal to use, seeing it gave me a reason to go out and buy a lever action 44 magnum. It's a lot more fun to hunt with, than my pump action 12 guage was. It doesn't beat me up with the recoil like the 12 guage did, plus ammo is a lot cheaper than the rifled slugs I used to buy. I love hunting with my new rifle. Like they say, safety lies between a persons ears, not on what type of weapon that they're holding.

I called a question into "Ask The Specialist" on WCMU channel 28 tonight. Tonight it was Ask the DNR. My question was to have them talk about the NRC meeting today and what information they had on the extension of the Straight Wall Cartridge regulation. Both the Head of DNR Law Enforcement and the Chief of Wildlife Management were on the show and both had attended the NRC meeting today. They both feel that the regulation will be renewed and with no sunset section in the renewal. They feel it will be renewed at the May 13th meeting.
Hopefully, it is a done deal.

No, the way it sounded was just as it is already written. They did talk some about including air powered guns but nothing specifically.
Once it is passed will be the time to talk with your legislators to maybe expand the cartridges that could be included.

You must mean air rifle to continue like the straight wall cartridge right?

Based on the meeting, it appears as though the DNR will be recommending the sunset be lifted on the SWC regulation, making it permanent. They also sited the Law Enforcement Division report as supporting the recommendation. There was also talk of simplifying the regulation by creating an all inclusive cartridge list to avoid confusion.
