The regulations for straight-walled cartridge use in the limited firearms deer zone were only set in place for three years and are now subject to review. This topic is on Natural Resources Commission agendas for this spring. It will be discussed at the following:

· Natural Resources Commission Meeting, April 13, 2017, at the MSU Diagnostic Center, 4125 Beaumont Road, Lansing MI 48910

· Natural Resources Commission Meeting, May 11, 2017, West Shore Community College, Administrative and Conference Building, North Lounge, Scottville, MI 49454

The complete agendas for these meetings will be available two to three weeks before they take place and can be found at www.mi.gov/nrc. Typically, the Policy Committee on Wildlife and Fisheries portion of the meeting begins at 1:00 p.m. and public comment takes place two or three hours later. With modern shotguns with slug barrels and sabot style ammo, not to mention the range of modern ML, I think removing the straight wall cartridge law would be silly.

Agreed, but I'm still gonna wait for the official ruling before getting that .450 upper for my AR.

I've owned a 44 mag for about 20 years. Was happy I could use it in zone 3.
Too bad I only gun hunted 2 days the past 3 years.

BTW - the new Remington ML using 4 pellets is no doubt has greater range now and the vast majority of the calibers in straight wall with possibly only the 460 being able to stay with it. But the accuracy potential of straight wall is still better than shotgun or ML on shot to shot comparison IMHO. ML still has all the variables of consistent charge, bullet to sabot friction, sabot to rifling engagement etc., shotgun shot to shot consistency and associated recoil that can be hard to manage for slight build such as youth, women, slight build men and even old codgers like myself (which isn't an issue for me but my age group for sure). I have run into a lot folks at range with .357's, 44's etc that are having a blast shooting getting ready for deer season. What was great to see was the number of young folks there shooting these rifles. I shoot often so I got to see some of the rules impact. I also saw a Ruger in .450BM that was interesting in that the recoil from this small light rifle turned the guy off after 3 shots so I think the AR upper replacement is maybe better option.

The MIDNR memorandum would make you believe this was proposed in 2014. Wow, talk about a blind eye to the process! This regulation was proposed in 2009 as House Bill HB5416 by Matt Lori of 59th District and went thru several renewals such as HB4283 until finally getting thru both legislative bodies to the NRC for three year trial. This bill took five years to get to the NRC. DNR fought this every inch of the way. Kind of interesting the memorandum describes the positive impacts similar to what was submitted to support this bill. Ohio actually took our draft verbatim, added common sense calibers and ran with it faster than MIDNR. I believe it will continue on and be positive influence for hunter recruitment for youth, women, older generation folks that wish to reduce recoil and even those who currently don't shoot enough due to recoil from slugs. This was the sole reason this bill was proposed by myself to Representative Lori and appreciate how much work he and his administrative assistant Susan Martin dedicated to getting this bill thru the process. I would also thank MUCC to bringing their weight to the process as well which no doubt helped get it over the hump with DNR and got it to NRC. Hopefully, we can get some common sense calibers (30-30. .35 Rem, 45-70, .32 Spec, etc.) added in this renewal.

Even though I hunt very little in zone 3 I want to thank those involved with pushing the proposal forward. I would like to see WCO 3 adopted as written.

Yesterday I wrote a letter to both my State Representative and State Senator in regards to supporting the regulation to continue to allow the use of straight wall cartridges. Here is the response I got from my Representative this morning.

Thank you for taking the time to write me.

I certainly will advance those concerns to the NRC. I am a member of the Sportsman’s Caucus and will inquire with the chairman of that caucus about a joint letter expressing our support.

I emailed my state senator, Dale Zorn, and my state rep, Jason Sheppard, today. If I get answers I will post them here. It would be a really good idea for everyone who would like to see these cartridges remain in use to contact your senators and reps. Making noise is good.

Well I have been thinking of getting my FIL a rifle to use this year for deer. I think I'll opt for the .44 mag so he can use it down here in zone 3 as well as up at deer camp. This is great news from our DNR.

I emailed Dan Lauwers today...couldn't get through on Phil Pavlov's site from my phone, but I'll figure something out!

If you get an answer and you reply, please have them consider 30-30's and the 45/70 too. Both would be acceptable in the SLP and no greater safety risk than a modern inline ML, in my opinion.

I have mixed feelings here. I do agree that there are several other calibers that would be a good fit for the SLP. I am not sure that should be pushed right now. I am leaning towards just making the current law permanent, then, seeking to have it expanded. Kinda like a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.

I totally agree. Let's just worry about getting the law passed permanently for what we got, and worry about adding other calibers to it down the road.
