Here in NE Indiana we have several lakes that the DNR stocks with trout. The guy's that fish there generally use a minnow pattern of some sort, depending on the time of year. I have fished a couple of the lakes with dry flies and nymphs and caught fish, but the majority are caught on streamers and minnow patterns. There is even a minnow pattern with it's own lake name, Lake Gage Special, which is basically a small Rainbow Thunder Creek with some slightly different color of deer hair. It works great.
