steelhead rod help

I'm looking for advice on a steelhead rod for fishing from the bank, drifting spawn with and w/o a float. Don't want to spend big bucks. Just curious what everyone uses on the rivers since it's been many years and I've not yet fished for salmonids here in Michigan (I'm a warm water guy). Looking for advice on length, action, comfort, etc.

I'm looking at Cabela's rods, but also Berkley's Buzz Ramsey line and Fenwick's rods. I've got a broken Fenwick I can exchange at a discounted price so my first choice would be a rod from Pure Fishing group, but I welcome any and all suggestions. Going to put a Daiwa SS1300 reel on the rod. Anyone care to share?

Thanks

I like Gander Mtn Guide Series and Sheakspeare Intrepids.
I love my Shakespeare Intrepid, the best $29.95 I ever spent on a fishing pole!

Note: I have an 8 footer, but went to a 9.5 this past year and really like it much better than the shorter one, it had a more sensitive feel than the 8 footer.
Thanks fellas. Didn't think to check GM as it's about same drive as to Cabela's I will see what they have. I'm surfing over to the Shakespeare web site right now...

I love the Shakespeare Intrepid IM-7 or IM-8, I have a couple of each in 10.5 footers. By far the best rod around for under 50.00.
Not only do they work great for the rivers but have a great action and enough backbone to use on the surf.

The guide series rods are $10 off this week according to the ad in the paper. My 9 foot Advantage that I use for salmon is only $40 regularly - sensative enough to detect the lightest bite of a perch and strong enough to haul in a 25 pound king hooked in the top of the tail.
Great, now I've got to decide between the Shakespeare and Gander Mtn, LOL! Thanks for the help guys. I can't wait to try winter steelhead fishing. If anything it will get me out and see places other than SE Michigan.

I'll let you know what pole I end up getting,

Jim
