State Arbor Day Celebration Planned for April 27

The State of Michigan will officially celebrate Arbor Day on Friday, April 27, with more than 1,000 second and third grade students from area schools at an event at Potter Park in Lansing. The event runs from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. and is sponsored by the Department of Natural Resources, Michigan Arbor Day Alliance, Michigan Forestry and Park Association and the City of Lansing.

The pre-selected classes will participate in hands-on natural resource activity stations that focus on trees and their ecosystems. At 11:45 a.m., students, teachers, parents, dignitaries and community members will attend the official tree planting ceremony. The ceremony will feature a cross-cut saw race between the City of Lansing foresters, juggling entertainment by Tim Salisbury, an announcement of the state winner of the Arbor Day National Poster Contest, and the planting of the State Arbor Day Tree, donated by Ayles Tree Service.

Also in observance of Arbor Day, the State Capitol will again host an exhibit of Arbor Day art. Fifth graders across Michigan submitted original posters to the Arbor Day Poster Contest that will hang in Room 53 of the State Capitol Building during Arbor Week April 23-27.

For more information about the Michigan Arbor Day Alliance, the State Arbor Day Celebration, other Arbor Day events around the state or to learn how to be selected for the 2008 celebration, please contact Jennifer Rostar, State Arbor Day coordinator, at 517-337-4999 or visit www.miarbordayalliance.org.

The DNR is committed to the conservation, protection, management, use and enjoyment of the state’s natural resources for current and future generations.

I will be at the event in Howell that day with the Ducks Unlimited Tent. See you all there and take the kids to one on your area.
