Anyone else planning to put some squirrels in the pot this weekend? I can hardly wait!

Here are the tastes of fall, ready in an hour and a half. My mother used this for pheasant back in the day as well.

Another opening day for squirrels. My son is 7, just your average kid. Not ready to slay boone and crocket bucks at 500 yards, so squirrels are great. He was upset we didn't make it out until the evening due to church. We don't own property but are lucky enough to live within a drive to 2 different state game areas. By the time the truck is loaded you would think it's Christmas. We beat the heat and ended up with 3 squirrels. He loves being out picking the path and pointing out all the wildlife. Another opening day that I'll never forget and hopefully he won't either.

Are these available
Sept 15 is the hunting opener in my mind: squirrel hunting > deer hunting.

I went out to some public that I'd never hunted before on Sunday. I was scouting the goose situation there but also squirrel hunting. I only saw 3.

Additionally, it was a productive mushroom foraging day and I got a big groundhog in the backyard.

So.. I haven't hunted squirrel since I was a teenager (like 20+ years ago) with my grandpa, and I'm getting the itch to try again here soon. I'm going to take my girlfriend, who is a bit into taxidermy and skulls. I've got enough of a half-assed plan on where to go and what the rules are and whatnot, but I'm trying to rationalize one thing still... Do you guys have any advice on how to make a clean/humane kill without damaging the skull? Grandpa taught me to always aim for the head. Will be taking a .22 rifle and pistol to the field, both of which I've shot recently and am fairly accurate with. Is aiming just behind the shoulder for a heart/lung shot acceptable? Sorry if this seems like a dumb question, but I need to mentally figure it out before I go.

Been out of squirrel hunt for a long time. Then last febuary, a buddy talked me into entering a squirrel derby. We got a late start as we had a big snow fall and my buddy needed to clear his drive first and had issues.
I did get one and missed one.
I’m not as steady as I was in my younger days. Esp on those close high overhead.
Been thinking about trying some shooting sticks to help steady my shot.
But I don’t really see that helping on high overhead shots.
Maybe a single long stick shoved in my front pants pocket would get me high enough. No sure.
Can’t use a shotgun till you’re 70+
Any remedies for a guy that lost his edge?
