Six honored for efforts in saving capsized anglers

GIBRALTAR -- The City Council handed out six Life Saving Awards Monday.

Rick Marcum, Kathy Marcum, Samantha Pruett, Dean DeValerio, Brett Pruett and Michael Baldwin were recognized for the parts they played in rescuing four fishermen Feb. 22.

"One of the things about living in Gibraltar is you live on the water, and when you live on the water, there's some peril involved," Mayor Richard Kuhn said. "We're lucky to have good neighbors who watch out for each other."

A boat filled with four fishermen capsized in the Detroit River the night of the rescue. Sixteen-year-old Samantha Pruett heard the men call for help. Her father, Brett, alerted the Marcums, who launched their boat and rescued the men with some of their neighbors.

The four men survived with no permanent injuries.
