I was considering chopping down a Silver Maple that is in my front yard. One of the large branches off of the main trunk was infested with insects. Removed the branch three yrs ago and it semms to be doing fine. My question is, can I top this tree and get new growth out of it? Where (how high up) would I have to top it? Any advise would be great.

Thanks.

One thing.
They have a very extensive root base.
My Dad brought one home from the Farm.
It was a Awesome tree.
Only problem, he planted it close to the easement of our newly devolemented subdivison.
Many years later, the root system buckled our side walk and driveway.
Also caused numerous problems with our sewerage system.

I topped a maple in my yard,it really didn't look good and I wished I had just cut the thing down and started over. I wasted three years looking at a halfassed looking tree in my front yard before I got rid of it. My new maple is growing like crazy, they grow really fast and this new one seems to be growing about three feet a year. I would cut the old one out and start over.
