I hunt in the rifle zone with my remington 7400 with a redfield widefield 3x9 scope. My question is I hunt in a heavily wooded area and i think my longest shot is about 60 yds Is there a better rifle for shorter yardages?I guess what I am saying is i really dont need the bullet to carry for a long distance.

The first one that came to my mind would be the trusty lever action 30-30 :D after that I would say a good 12ga. slug-gun. ;)

The good ole 3030 model 94 win. I own a browning 7mm rem mag, savage 300, several shotguns, and model 94 3030 win. In the swamps and thick stuff its my 3030 hands down. Them short barrelled 3030's are so light and fast, they are a close range deer killin machine!:D

My dad was killed a few deer he uses a Ruger 44 auto(looks just like thier 10/22). Light to carry swings fast and has great knock down power out to 100 yards.

My choice would be a 12ga. Shotgun with a slug barrel. Those new slug guns are very accurate. Plus you could also buy a longer barrel for pheasants, ducks or whatever. A combination gun if you will.

I agree with all of the above.

You never mentioned the caliber of your Remington, but I'm guessing a 30-06??

Personally, I'd go with the 30-30 or the slug gun.

I've taken alot of deer with the Ruger 44 mag, with 240 and 250 grain bullets. I just started using the 250s and really like the results.

I agree I love my Ruger .44 mag for short situations. I like to slip through thick pine stands sometimes and that light little rifle is just the ticket. I always keep in mind that I have to shoot short and make perfect hits and I have had great results. Good Luck, Eric

I've seen some really good reports on the new Hornday .450 in a Marlin lever action rifle. Its what the .45-70 should be if it was loaded up to its potential - a real stopper.

I bet you are looking for an excuse to buy another gun and you already have a gun that will do the job. After said that, I will vote for a 12ga with slug barrel or Ruger 44 mag. The Ruger is small and guick to the shoulder and under 100yds. will do a nice job. If you think you will need more knock down power look at the 444 cal. guns.

Lots of good choices posted. If you want to stay with a rifle cartridge I'll agree with the lever gun in 30-30.
Otherwise, a pump shotgun in 12 gauge (3" chambered) with a 23" to 26" smooth bore barrel and either a scope or nice fiber optic sights. That would allow you to swap chokes and use the gun for everything from deer, turkey, waterfowl, and small game to skeet/trap.

been carrying a win. 32 spcl sense I was 14 - and I wouldn't trade it either - it is actually quite a good 150-225 yard rifle too :)
