I bought a Shimano 2000FA, Sedona last summer and have had problems with the line coming off in a cluster when casting lures. It is not twisted but rather comes off tangled in one spot on the line. This happens after casting for a while. Sometimes it can be untangled and sometimes it has to be cut. Then you can cast for a while and it will do it again. I called Shimano and they said they never heard of this problem. This is the first Shimano reel I have had. I have had Mitchells, Garcias and Quantems and never had this problem. A friend has two of these reels and has experienced this a few times but mine does it too much to use it. Anyone else have this problem? I can't see anything pysically wrong with it.

I also have a shimano but not sure of the model.
I have the same problem but thought it was just me and my lack of exp. and thought maybe I had to much line on it but that wasnt it either

I've had this problem with all my reels at one time or another, usually when I'm casting to an area where I have to start reeling immediatly. What happens is that you get a loop of slack line when you close the bail and pile the rest on top, sabotaging your next cast.If you pull a little line out after you close the bail,to where the line, lines up evenly with the roller on the bail,it will prevent this.
Reels with a high profile drag nut seem to be the worst.Spiderwire braid is prone to this also.
My Daiwa reels seem to do it the least, but will if I'm not paying attention. You can prevent it by paying attention to your spool every time you start to reel for loops.
Overfilling your reels with line can increase the problem also.Leave about an 1/8" from the rim when putting on new line.

fishing addict - I've had the same problem when I'm not paying real close attention and reel in some slack, however this reel does it even when you may sure you have a tight line when reeling. I've just never had this problem with any of the many spinning reels I've had over the years.

esox master - I have Trilene XL on it now and I don't know what was on it when I got it but I believe it was Trilene also.

Try closing the bail manually instead of reeling it closed. I know it might be a little bit annoying, but that should take care of the problem. Also you may be getting line twist, try a high quality ball bearing swivel or try re-spooling with different line. If all else fails send it back to shimano.

Interesting. I believe that is called "balloning." I've got the excact same reel and I haven't had any trouble with it(accept for a little sand in it, but thats my fault). I would think it is with the line(?). What pound line are you using. Heavy line tends to be stiffer and would come off a reel easier.
Another thing it could be is how tight the line is on the spool. If you are using light lures and not catching fish(sounds like my steelhead season :)), the line on the spool would be loose and would come off more all at once. Good Luck.

Foxy - I have 8 lb. on it now. I agree with the points you made but I do the same things with my other spinners and no problems.

Zofchak - The friend I mentioned in my first post closes him bail manually and it has eliminated the problem for him. I guess I'm going to have to do the same thing but there is a reason this reel does that and I was hoping to conquer it but I may just have to give in or put it in a drawer and use my other reels. Anyway thanks to all that responded. I have got a lot of great info and advice on this forum and didn't even half to ask. Just read.

I've had the same problem with every reel I've owned. You just got too much line on the reel,,, peel off a good chunk of that line or try re-spooling, like someone else mentioned. I would always "fill" the spool, when I got a new reel,,, then when I got out fishin' I'd have to strip off about 50 yards of line that was in a tangled mess. After that, I was fine. Less line = less tangles

I've had this problem with all my shimanos. When I called them, they told me right away that I must be casting lots of lures and that their reels "aren't designed for that". The bail arm also had a groove worn into it, as it's not made out of cheap soft plastic instead of machined aluminum. (They sent me a new bail arm for it though, so I'm not sure what to think.) I've found that when casting, if I pull my rod back to my side to draw up any slack line just after I start to reel, the problem is reduced. It's annoying as hell and aggervating to spend good money on what's supposedly a quality reel, then be told it's not meant to be used for heavy casting.

WHB - That doesn't work in this case. Number 1-I don't have that problem with my other reels and number-2- it still does it after I cut off the tangled part.

Ruler - I believe you have the answer to my problem. I don't know why I didn't think of it. All I have to do is quit casting with it and bingo no more problem. LOL Thanks.

i have both a sedona 2000 and a symmetre 2000, both have 6lb test and have had no problems with either yet.

Possibly its the line you are using along with the smaller spool. I had a huge nightmare like this when I tried Rapala line (it was on sale). After fishing with it for one day, I went out and bought some Pline Floroclear and haven't had a problem.

Maybe the line is just real stiff along with some line twist.

Make sure to always spool your line with the line coming off the bottom of the spool. Coming off the top adds more twist. As Zofchak said, if you manually close the bail (which is suprisingingly easy to get used to) you'll have half as much problem with your line in general.

what i found is that mono tends to hold its shape in cold weather so when your lure hits the water the line keeps coming off.....you will notice that when it gets a little warmer out the line wont do that.....in the mean time you will have to close your bail by hand....that is what i was doing all day.....You should close your bail by hand anyway because you will prolong the life of your real......Even those magnetic bailers wear out!

I have got 2 Sedona 2000's and 2 spirex 1000 and 2000. I have not had any problems like that. Like quackerStakcer said, make sure you are spooling your line on the correct way, and try a barrel swivel above the lure.

I use co-polymer lines like P-Line and Yo-Zuri, close my bail manually everytime, and have never owned a Shimano.

I have never had this problem, except the one time I put too much line on the spool.
