Tried 2 3/4 inch Hornady SST cartridges, in mine today. Was not really happy with the grouping at 100yds. Had a couple fliers.

Going to get some Barnes and Accutips, and see if those will perform any better.

Scope mounting:
Found a one piece Weaver Base. $20.00 Did have to shorten the front screw for the base, but no mods to 3 other screws. Medium Leupold PRW rings & a 3x9x40 Nikon Slughunter.

No issues with scope clearance to gun, scope clearance to bolt, loading shells or ejection of shells.

Let me know if you find the Barnes....Everybody who had them around here, including Cabelas and Bass Pro are out. It figures, I have 5.00 off a box coupon that expires at the end of the year. None of the folks I checked had the accutips either....

After spending the better part of the last 5 days trying to locate the subject slugs for my son's new Savage 220, I finally called Federal. They have advised me that the slug is discontinued: P209XT1 (tipped) and P209XS hollow point. The replacement is P209TC which is not yet available and according to Federal will be in early 2012.

So much for sighting in with the Savage recommended load!

It seems as though ACCUTIPS are just as hard to find.

Any suggestions?

Ables ammo online.

Doh! Just checked. OUT.

They're a good place to look though in the future:

Nope! I was fortunate that some great members here helped but both are hard to find! When you find them....buy as much as you can afford!
The only negative I can think of about this gun is that ammo that is not on the recommended list from Savage, doesn't shoot all that well. So we are stuck with 3 choices. And I hope that the new Barnes tipped from Federal shoot like the old ones or else........ :(

Might as well get them while the gettin's good. Just hate to spend the coin sighting in etc and then switch to the new Federal. However I believe in bench tests the Remmy's were a bit more accurate?

My gun liked the 3" accutips the best, next was the 3" Barnes and a close third was the 2.75" accutips. All gave acceptable accuracy but the 3" accutips were tremendous. Since all 3 are difficult to find, I just want to have all 3 on hand so I know I have at least something.....

Yes! The 2 3/4" shells jammed on eject. I would pull the bolt all the way back and the spent shell would remain attached with the next shell trying to shift up from the magazine and jamming the two. After a little practice I learned to pull the bolt smooth and firm to successfully eject the 2 3/4" shell. But between the two, the 3" shell ejected much more reliably than the 2 3/4".

The scope/mount was never the cause of the jam.
It feels like the shell extractors release at the very end of the bolt cycle. Feels like that last 1" of slide is the most important to successfully get the extractors to release. The length of the bold cycle feels longer than my long action .30-06, I think that might be why so many people have discussed extraction issues. Their tendency might be to let up at the end of the cycle rather than insure the bolt gets slammed all the way back. After a couple hang ups initially with 2 3/4" FTX I added some extra muscle at the end of the bolt cycle and the shells eject as they should.

Were the Barnes you mentioned the tipped ones or the hollow points? I managed to get the last 4 boxes of hollow points from Shooters Service today...

Thanks. I'll mention that to the little Girtski Christmas morning! However, for a 14 year-old, he's pretty hard on everything. Here's a picture from his JV football...Looks kind mean doesn't he?:yikes:

e.g.w. one piece picatinny base ROUND BACK.,#41100.$39 optics planet ebay store..warne maxima q.d. rings LOW...burris fullfield ii 3-9x40..no issues
OK...Got the Nikon Prostaff 2-7X32...same scope that is on both my ML and my 12ga. Got it for 125.00 delivered.

Ordered the EGW for 36.99 delivered

Now, before I order the Warne Rings, I was wondering if you could give me the 1" tube length on your Burris. All the specs posted give the overall length as 12.4" but they do not break it down after that. If you would be kind enough to check that + the distance from where the tube starts to taper up to the eyepiece, I can confirm similiarity with my Nikon....

Guess I kinda hijacked this thread didn't I?

Got it from Burris...Very quick response and full specs for that scope and a few others..

Well the Savage 220 was a big hit with my son. Going to the club today to put a few rounds through....Gotta call the gun shop first...There were a few changes where I bought rings at the local gun shop and had them bore sight it. Didn't notice until he opened the case yesterday that the gun shop used gloss rings and the scope and barrel are matte. Not a BIG deal, but if I can get them to match it up it would be better.

Hope to take a late antlerless with it tomorrow!

So Federal Premium appears to have released the new Barnes Tipped Expander, 3" 20 Gauge slug as product code P209TC. But is it the same slug as the discontinued product code?

The P209TC appears to be on the market but I can't find any resource to confirm if the bullet was changed or just a new product code assigned. Here's what I found so far:

1. The federal Premium website lists the new product number (P209TC) but does not acknowledge it as a new product for 2012...HMMM! This suggests the new slug (P209TC) may be identical to the discontinued slug. Federal is not offering any information to compare the new to the old product number.
2. The new product number appears to be available on-line but I can't find any product reviews to help judge if it will perform the same as the old.

It will be a while before I get to the range and am curious about the new bullet. Plus if they changed the bullet I may just use the four boxes of accu tips I have from last year and change over.

Just wondering if anyone else is watching the release of the new bullet before deciding on their 2012 Savage 220 "Slug of Choice".
