So Kody went out with a couple buddies today and got first blood on his new boat. I’ve never caught one I don’t think but is this a Sauger?

Have no idea. But sweet!

I've always been confused about the whole sauger, saugeye, pickerel, walleye thing.
I was reading about lake Winnebago and they got some walleye hybrids that have special regs. I have no idea how to tell which is which. And the hybrids you can only keep one.

sweet! looks like a sauger but never seen one in real life, splotchy black patches and black speckles on dorsal fin vs no patches and walleye have that black dot on the dorsal this one looks sauger to me. Cool catch if it is one!

caught this one the other day, the face seemed smushed in like it ran into a wall when it was young, cutting the cheeks out I remember it had a slightly different bone structure and sometimes Ive noticed fish with deformities but now Im thinking this one might have been a sauger or just a walleye deformed in the face
Does anyone know if sauger bone structure is different around the mouth? From the pics Ive seen comparing the two species it looks like sauger face is pushed in. Anyway this one had the weird splotches too

I'd say saugeye! Use to catch sauger up in the UP. Sauger have the blotchy spots and black dots on the top fin. Saugeye have the slight white spot on the bottom of the tail to my knowledge. Nice fish

Sauger will not have the white blotch on the tail like a walleye or saugeye, sauger tend to be darkerto. We caught a mixed bag on LOW in Feb ‘98, came home with limits of perch, sauger & walleye.

Definitely looks like a sauger, based on the info above. Note the fins, long, skinny body shape, and light, grayish color with a few dark and irregular splotches. Get a measurement? Looks long for a sauger.
