Thing is some guns make it easier to hit the deer in the right spot. I've never used a 30-30 and never will. They are ballisticly deficient.
Not many deer shot beyond 200 yards in Michigan. Exbal shows a 7" drop with Federal PS 150 grain load.

30-30 is very capable round. Know your rifle, regardless of the chambering.

Exbal at 200 yards with 100 yard zero.

Why use a rifle that launches a 150gr bullet at less than 2400fps, when you can use a rifle that launches a 100-150gr bullet at 3000fps(243, 25/06, 270, 30/06) at roughly the same cost of ammo? Hitting a "pie plate" at 200 yards isn't acceptable in my book, maybe you should check your shooting skills if you can only hold a 6" or 8" group at that distance when target shooting, your group will probably double when a bruiser walks out in front of you, good luck with your 15" group.. oh and with double the drop and half the energy. Have fun with your 30/30, there are much better rifles out there, and guess what if your "experience" makes you shoot better, then a high-intensity cartridge will just work that much better.

And just because someone is younger than you doesn't mean you're a better shooter than them. These disputes can be settled at the range.

If that's the case why don't you bow hunt? Arrows are reusable. Id suggest aluminum if your going to reuse.
Actually, in my experience, carbon arrows will last through more pass throughs than aluminum as the don't bend becoming worthless.

My best one arrow tally was the bucks with one arrow and then I screwed it up in the quiver and lost track. Try that with aluminum arrows.

For the ranges typically encountered in Michigan, pretty much any caliber will get the job done if the hunter is skilled and makes good shot selections.

Ok where do find shells that cheap?
Usually right before hunting season starts. Dicks, Dunhams Kmart, Walmart will run a sale on the big 5. 30-30, 30-06, 270, 308 & 243. That is the time to stock up. More then likely it will be Rem Green & Yellow Box or Win Power Point. $7-12 a box. I boxes 10 boxes years ago that I am still using. Keep them dry last forever. Also I have yet not to dump a whitetail on its butt in 40 some yrs of hunting with one shot of round nose 30-30 170gr Rem ammo. Shots from 10 to 100yds. Shot placement is always key Yes but 30-30 is more then capable in tackling in the lower 48 within 50yds including Man!
LiL Marlin lever makes a hell of a home defense weapon.

I have a .270, 30-06, and .308. If you want a good all around caliber get then .308 you can hunt a wide variety of game up to but not limited to Elk. The .308 also has a manageable recoil.

Ive taken deer over 1400 yards with my sako 30/06
The .308 will get there but wont hurt a june bug
Imo shooting any big game 1400yds with an 30/06 is foolish. Even in capable hands there isnt much energy or velocity at that range. A standard 30cal hunting bullet will not expand at low velocities especially one with a high ballistic cowfficient. U must have been using a bullet with a very high ballistic coefficient. Kudos for making a great lr shot. Maybe step up the caliber (300 rum/ 338) and zip(lots more velocity) if you make these shots routine.

Since the '06 is 150 to 200 fps over the 308 at the muzzle I guess at 1400 yds it could probably nail the Geico Gecko. Some quick & dirty ballistics work suggests that a very high BC bullet (210 gr VLD - .626) at a MV of just over 2600 fps would drop well over 800 inches (nearly 70 feet) and a 5 mph wind would drift the bullet over 80 inches at 1400 yards!! It is the only 30 cal bullet that is still supersonic at that distance (barely) and carries approximately 600 pounds of energy. Not exactly the prescribed medicine for big game work! Bottom line, as Newcub suggests, BS!!! Perhaps if the deer was tied to a tree and you have a skid load of ammo, nah ...

Ok 1400 yards, I have to admit it was a typo it should read 400 yard
"four hundred yards". the 1400 yards was a typo
sorry guys. This was my longest shot ever in 30 caliber, most of the deer I take are 100-250 yards as we overlook a pine forest

I have shot several deer with a 30-06, a couple with 30-30, and a couple with the .308. Most have been under 100 yds, although the longest was a heart shot at 147 yds with the .308. That is why I personally switched from the '06 to the .308, I got tired of the recoil/noise etc.. of the '06 and realized it was influencing my shots. As Eastwood said... "A man's got to know his limitations" :D

Anyhow, I tack drive my .308 and both my traditional and modern muzzleloaders. You have to be able to shoot without flinching. Too many people are afraid to admit they do, or they don't shoot enough to know they do.

Whew! Glad that was a typo on 1400 yd shots with an otsix. Thanks for clearing that up. 400yds is very doable with that kinda hardware.

Sounds like you hunt only one week a year so go with the most accurate and cheapest gun you can buy.A 308 is a good all around gun with less meat damage. You don`t need even need a new gun. Buy a used one . You used to borrow one every year so why not just get a used one. You don`t need the best but just the one that works for you. I bought a used gun 30 yrs ago and it looked beat up .I even had some guys say are you sure you can hit a deer with that. After two deer on my first drive they didn`t laugh any more hehe. It shot strait and dependable.. Looks were only cosmetic until I airbrushed a real cool real tree pattern on it. Now they say wow nice gun. So it`s the guts that make a gun not the looks. hehehe Hey good luck on your quest. :coolgleam

A .308 or 7mm08 will do just fine. Even out at 400 yards. I'm going out on a limb and saying that your shot was pure luck. Even at 200-250 yards the kill zone looks really small. At the range I pratice 200-300 yards alot. The field I hunt on is 300 yards across. If the wind is blowing cross ways I will not shoot. Don't want to gut shot a deer & feed the Coyotes.

He who called BS...was CORRECT!!!

Back to the original thread though. I have a .308 that I use for Da' UP, and it's an awesome gun. It's a Ruger M77 Mark II Ultralight w/ a Leupold Vari-X III in 2.5-8X. It's a GREAT brush gun!!! I'm comfortable out to about 150 yards. Even though my longest UP shot ever, in 30 years, is not over 125 yards.

I also have a Ruger M77 Mark II in .243 for my 16 year old son, and just bought a Ruger American in .243 for my 14 year old son. Both with Leupold VX-II in 3-9X. (Do you see a pattern here...Ruger...Leupold? I prefer not to mess with success.)
