Is it legal to have a passenger behind you if operating a snowmobile on Saginaw bay that is not a 2 up?
Ice fishing only.
Thanks

I was told my a CO friend that it technically needs to be manufactured and considered as a 2 up by manufacturer who made the machine in order to b legal to ride double.Goes the same for a quad also...again if u are riding double on a quad or sled that is not considered a true 2 up machine then a thicket could be issued.....a lot depends on COs discretion also tho and how there mood is for the day plus how ur riding and u treat them..now if ur going at a slower pace and not hot rodding around and being safe, then Ull probably be ok, but if CO feels ur unsafe and hot rodding around at a fast speed then I’d expect a stern warning if not a ticket....now I’ve seen and heard from others where no tickets were issued for riding on typical quad with two people, people commenting they even drove right pass CO in there vehicle riding double and still no problems, then in other cases a ticket was issued...I asked this question last year as I have a 10yr old son who goes with me...I asked am I legal if he rides with me on my quad even with a helmet and I was told I was illegal...He told me that if machine isn’t considered a 2 up and made by the manufacturer that way then any rider would have to ride on a sled or whatever is towed behind the quad...I’m like really? How safe and dumb is that to put my son on the shanty being towed across the ice vs riding with me on the machine...He’s too young to ride by himself really plus not everyone has the money to buy a 2 up or two machines....At his age he will still ride with me and will take my chances for now as there’s no way I’m gonna tow him behind my quad going out 3-4 miles or whatever...I feel he’s much safer with me on the machine personally....

I agree this law is a head scratcher. I was towing my GF in my sled behind my quad and she was sliding left and right even at a slow speed besides being uncomfortable. I stopped doing that and she rides with me now.
If I remember they say riding double on a one up is illegal because it don't have the suspension, handles, and footrest. I think the manufacturers lobbyists got to the states regulations department.

I got a warning a couple of years ago about riding double on my snowmobile. We were going slow and my kid and I had helmets on. But the co said it was alright for my kid to ride on my shanty at 50 mph if he wanted to with no helmet. What a joke. There is a lot of good co’s but a few can just be jackwagons.

Disagree all u want...Dont shoot the messenger, but I’m just relaying what I was told...if ur on a quad that’s considered for “1” person and r riding double it’s possible u could or could not be ticketed depending on CO’s discretion...yea maybe Ull b fine in most instances, other times maybe not...I didn’t write the rules, but hey I’m sure U know the rules much better then any trained CO officer does...As another stated, it’s still much safer to have ur younger kid ride with u on machine vs putting them on a tow sled/shanty behind machine...Not safe in my mind...

Huh... I thought there was a law that said you didn’t even need helmets of your ice fishing and going slow.

We have been doubled up or even tripled up with no helmets pulling shanty’s and never even been stopped?

I think if you’re driving slow and carefully they will basically ignore you.

Take it from a compliance officer (of a different variety): If the machine is not designed and manufactured for two people (quad or sled) and you have two people on it (regardless of age) then it's a violation. Whether it's cited by law enforcement is a matter of discretion on the part of the officer. Typically, I'd like to think they would exercise discretion in the case of a father/son scenario. Typically.

Unfortunately, some individuals are out to save the world and don't know how to responsibly use the power they have, so feel compelled to issue a citation for ANY violation of the law, and have little use for the responsible exercise of the discretion they do have.

Unfortunate, but true.

I have been a police officer for over 20 years.... unfortunately, just like every job in the universe....I work with a couple of douchebags.... they love to "enforce the law" ..... otherwise known as effn with people.

Been to Simcoe a couple times... passed CO's while operating my 1person quad with a passenger... always pulling a shanty while chugging along with helmets at 5mph.... so far I have not been bothered.

But, it's always a matter of time.... "that" guy will eventually stop you or me and read us the riot act or give us a ticket because "it's the law."

The issue with riding double on an ATV designed for only a single rider is due to the wheelbase on one for single riders is shorter than ATV’s designed for two. Depending on the weight of the rider and vehicle speed, it can create a danger of flipping over backwards. I personally don’t think if it’s a child and driver is going slow (on ice and not up hills) there is much danger. That’s why they don’t want people riding double on quads made for one

ATV: 2 person on a single rider designed vehicle is not legal
ATV: An ORV operated for the purpose of towing a fishing shanty or supply shed over the frozen surface of public waters at the minimum speed required to maintain controlled forward movement of the vehicle or while traveling to and from a fishing shanty at a speed of not greater than 10 miles per hour.

Their is no law on the books about riding 2 on a 1 up snowmobile. They have a law against riding 2 on a 1 up ATV. (ATV=ORV laws are different from snowmobiles) Best advice if you have a question regarding laws you should go straight to the source. Not asking on here where you will get 100s of different opinions. Call the DNR.

Good luck this season.

Who at the DNR were you talking to? I know at times some folks talk out of turn, not knowing fully what they're speaking to. Not saying this is the situation here, but some people are a bit clueless but will talk as though they're the final word.

Also, an unregistered snowmobile technically = ORV, at which times they can apply the ORV regs to you.
