If you found a place renting pontoons, obviously others have done it. You may want to identify the renting location so folks can chime in with their experiences, good or bad. Consider talking to your insurance agent for liability advice. Ask the renting location for a list of their previous customers so you can check with them also.

I rented one for a few days last summer in the UP. We were camping in Christmas and visiting Grand Island and the Pictured Rocks while doing some fishing along with the sight seeing. As far as protection, I'd seriously consider plenty of ice for the beer, bait and Trojans. Maybe bring a net. We had a great time!!! I can run a boat just fine and I wasn't worried about plowing into a tour boat but if you wanna buy some extra insurance as the previous poster recommended why not! I'd also recommend taking a GPS so you can find your way back to the rental place....
