When I bought my new boat the dealer put black registration letters over the green paint and from a short distance you wouldnt even think I had letters on it. I want to remove those letters and replace them with white ones. Does anyone know how to get the numbers off without taking the paint or other decals off? I think the numbers go over a pin stripe.

Yeah, if they're decals. I'd say a hair dryer or heat gun. But be careful with the latter, you could do more damage than good if you get it too hot !

I'm surprised that the dealer would do that. The numbers are supposed to be of a contrasting color (usually light letters on dark background or the other way around)

Goof Off will get any leftover glue residue off.

If you use heat, be careful in these cold temps. I used a heat gun once and it cracked the gel coat in a few areas where I got it too hot (as jpollman mentioned). Good luck. Another tip if you need to remove painted numbers or a boat name is Easy Off oven clearner. Always try a test spot first! :)
