Well Gunner is growing like a weed and really starting to hold steady on
the wing and string thing with his tail(well nubbin lol)held high.
He is about 18 weeks now so Its close to time
to take him to the local football field to start his check woah and come in commands. If he doesnt hunt great thats ok
because He is gonna be(heck He already is) a great Buddy. Here are a few in the yard chasing sticks pics.

I think that's the least of your worries as long as you stick with the basics, show him enough birds and don't push him too fast, too hard.

Pup's looking good!

That is one sharp looking pup!

I hope you can make the trip over to the field trial grounds at Highland Rec.with him some Saturday AM. I am sure we can scrape up a spare bird or two...pm me if interested.

A word of caution-I have always been told that the wing and string is not always the best ie; it is a nice little trick to do once or perhaps twice, but then it is time to put it away until you get your next pup

:yeahthat: to both statements. Look forward to seeing you at Highland, if I ever get out there again!

Thanks all for the compliments. Yep I hopefully will get out to Highland sometime. As for the wing/string thing,I only do it maybe 1 time a week if that and its for about 3 minutes or so just to keep him interested.

i only fool with the wing on a string a couple times after i bring them home. mostly just for my curiousity.

at 18 wks, (and well before that) i 'm hiding birds in the grass, and letting her go across the scent and hold point for a while. maybe once every night or two.

also you can throw pigeons for them to fire them up. just sort of skim the birds across the grass so they dont light and the pup cant catch them but gets their attention. again just a few, maybe 1-3 a night.

the problem with the wing is that it teases your pup into thinking he can grab it. dont want him to get that idea. and i wouldnt whoa train a pup that young, let them get reallly staunch on point first, then teach "whoa" to reinforce it. reason: first you cant whoa a dog into a point on a wild bird as you dont know where bird is. and second, trying to whoa a dog to point can cause some real grief down the line. i.e. blinking.

good luck with your pup and enjoy him, they grow up fast.
